Saturday April 27th Monthly Medal – Stroke & Putts

The cooler weather, heavier dews, some occasional rain and the regular irrigation, had seen the course green up considerably.  While there were still many bare patches on the fairways the greens were in top nick.  With both men and women contesting the April Monthly Medal the field was full.   The round began under cool, overcast skies with the sun poking through now and then seeing many players remove the outer layer of their warmer clothing.  In general all players got good value for well struck shots however, the softer fairways saw some drives pull up a little shorter than in previous weeks. In the end it was a very close Men’s Medal with the count back going down to the last six holes.   On another cooler afternoon the results were;

Men’s Winner & April Medalist; John Moody – 84/14/70 C/B from John Freestone – 92/22/70, Michael Nicholls Jnr – 87/16/71, Micheal Nicholls Snr – 93/22/71 & Pat Chisholm – 85/13/72

Wednesday April 24th – Stableford – 2nd Rd Silver Spoon

Winner;  Beryl Cole (24) – 37 pts from Wendy Gosden (28) – 35 pts & Jenny Hartley (20) – 34 pts

Saturday April 20th – Stroke – G4aC

A northerly breeze blew for most of the day and there was steady sunshine.  However the wind didn’t make much impact on the approach shots. A good sized Easter field with two guests saw many scores in the mid 70’s net.  A number of players saw several poor holes on the back nine bringing great front nines undone. With the greens running at good speed, over 8’s, a great pace for Romsey, most were happy with their condition, just the occasional lack of growth in core holes causing he odd diversion off line.  The day also saw funds raised for the Drummond Golf G4aC (cancer research) program.  On another wonderful day for golf the scores were;
Winner:  Ron Walker – 96/25/71from Les Gaunt –  80/8/72, Sherif Abdel Sayed – 96/24/72 &  Bob McLennan – 85/12/73
NTPs;15th – M Squire, 16th – D Baker

Monday April 15th – DDGA Women’s Pennant Golf Rd 1

Monday 15th April saw the beginning of the women’s pennant season. Romsey were drawn to play Lancefield at Trentham in the Division 3 Handicap. The weather was perfect not a breeze to be felt and warm and sunny. The players were all inspired after watching Tiger Woods win at Augusta. Unfortunately after most players having to give strokes we went down 3/2. We all agreed the course was in good condition and some of the greens beat us. The other match at Trentham, Avenel went down to Trentham 3 ½ /1 ½ .

Saturday April 13th – Par

It was a still, sunny afternoon for the club’s Par round.  A strong field teed up hoping to take advantage of the good conditions but, as usual with golf, expectations rarely meet reality.  There was some additional difficulty added to the round as, during the past week, a number of damaged and dangerous trees had been felled leaving piles of wood and some heavily churned areas of soil.  The ongoing dry, virtually no rain since early January, saw widening cracks on some fairways and, outside the irrigated areas, many bare patches so relief on fairway played was still given.  Despite the more than challenging conditions a few golfers were able to rise above the pack and return a f\good score.  The day’s results were;

Winner; Mick Squire (6) – +5 from Pat Chisholm (14) – +3 & Andrew Laing (21) – +2

NTPs; 15th Hugh Drummond.

Algie Mitchell Shield Winner John Laing (right) with RGC Captain Scott Williams
