Saturday June 23rd – 4BBB Stroke

Players headed to the tee on a very chilly afternoon, there was virtually no wind and the sun declined to shine through.  The course was very wet and all fairways were soft. The very cold air held up all drives and made approach shots difficult to predict.  The greens were slightly slower than in recent weeks but again putted very true.  The 4BBB Stroke competition saw a number of pairs vying for the lead before steady drizzle over the final few holes brought almost everyone back to the field.  In the end the 4BBB Stroke event a battle between two old stagers and a couple of much lower markers.  However, despite the tough conditions a number of golfers put in excellent individual performances.  On a cold, wet afternoon the results were;

Winners; Kev Dunn/Hugh Drummond – 84/22/62 from Rob Rea/Mal Mottram – 81/14.5/66.5, John Laing/Andrew Laing – 91/21.5/69.5 & Ron Walker/John Freestone – 91/21/70

Individual scores; Kev Dunn – 93/24/69, Mal Mottram – 83/11/72 & Hugh Drummond – 92/20/72

NTPs; 1st – Andrew Laing & 15 – Mal Mottram

Friday June 22nd – Shirley Deane 4BBB Stableford – Nagambie G. C.

Romsey GC was represented by Wendy Gosden and Darlene Baker at the 2018 Shirley Deane 4BBB Stableford event at Nagambie Golf Club. The round began at 9.30 am with the temperature hovering around 1°C.  Despite the chill there was a large field of 76 players. The wintery conditions soon gave way to some sun and the remainder of the round proved to be quite pleasant.  The course was in very good condition with a lot of run down the middle of the fairways and greens that were well grassed and true.  The overall winners were from Seymour G. C.

2018  Deane Winners; Ricky Rickman & Irene Davey, –  45 pts.

The RGC team combined well to score 37 pts.

Wednesday June 20th – Stableford

A small field of hardy players took to the course on a very chilly morning for the club’s Stableford competition.  The course was very wet and heavy with balls stopping almost as soon as they landed and usually picking up mud.  One small positive was the dew and/or frost on a few greens gave a clear indication of what line to take when putting.  The overall conditions made it very difficult to card a good score..  The morning’s results were;

Winner; Darlene Baker, from Wendy Gosden & Jenny Hartley

Saturday June 16 – Stableford

With wet and virtually freezing conditions predicted a number of members ensconced themselves at home with a warm drink and a comfortable chair however, there were a few hardy (others may use a different adjective) golfers who took to the course for the club’s stableford competition.  Consistent rain during the week saw very soft fairways and the cold air robbed distance from all shots making club selection trickier than usual.  Despite the recent rain and heavy dews the greens were surprising quick and many putts cruised well passed the cup.  The challenging conditions made it very difficult to get into any form of rythmn and when the drizzle descended late in the round players began looking towards the rooms and a warm snack.  On a very difficult day for the golf the results were;

Winner; Chris vanDerVliet (23) – 33 pts C/B from Anthony Lakey (22)

Wednesday June 13th – 4th Rd Silver Spoon – Stableford

A smaller than usual group of players braved the wintry conditions to compete in the 4th Round of the Silver Spoon. Life Member Leila Beasley was at the club early to send the field off with a cheery wave but she wisely decided to retire to a warm room rather than brave the elements. The temperature didn’t get above 8 degrees and the biting wind made it feel even colder, scoring was going to be tough.  Some low lying areas of the course are quite soggy but generally the fairways and greens are very good.  High approached shots were holding well allowing confident strokes to the greens.  Fortunately the threatening rain held off for the duration of the round.  On a cold and windy day the results were;
Winner; Darlene Baker (17) – 35 pts from Pam Drummond (30) – 28 pts C/B, from Jenny Hartley (24),  Wendy Gosden (29) – 26 pts

Saturday June 9th – Stroke

Another beautiful, early winter’s day, virtually no wind and clear skies with the sun poking through for most of the afternoon. Recent rain and heavy dews had left the course quite soft so relief, fairway played, was given.  The cold air and soft fairways saw all players lose distance off the tee but those who were able to hit the greens in regulation were well rewarded.  Despite the extra moisture the greens ran at a good pace however putts had to be right on line to find the cup; the usual movement on the greens at RGC is rapidly becoming a thing of the past.  The field flowed well and all groups were back in the rooms inside four hours.  The day’s results were;

Winner; Scott Williams – 88/17/71 from Les Gaunt – 83/9/74, Anthony Lakey – 96/22/74 & Sherif Abdel-Sayed – 98/24/74

NTPs; 1st & 16 – Mal Mottram, 15th – Anthony Lakey

Monday June 4th – 2018 Women Pennant Finals – Lancefield G. C.

The 2018 DDGA Women’s  Pennant Finals were played at Lancefield. The course was in good nick with the usual fast greens and cover returning to the fairways.  RGC was competing in Handicap Division 3 playing Avenel.  The RGC team fought out five close matches to take the pennant.

Results on the day were;

Division 1; Marysville D Alexandra – 4/1
Division 2; Seymour Broadford – 3/2

Division 3; Romsey D Avenel – 3/2
The RGC women have won two previous pennant flags; 1978 in Central Highlands District and 1995 in Dalhousie District.

Proud players who represented RGC during the 2018 Pennant Season

Saturday June 2nd – Stableford

Another pleasant Saturday, sunny with light southern winds, a little chilly in the shadows but nice in the sun.  Preferred  lie “on fairway played” was still being given, but there was noticeable growth on all fairways.  The field flowed very well and all players were back in the clubrooms in just over four hrs.  While the greens were still playing true and with good pace, scuff marks from shoes were very evident and may have negatively effected some putts and possibly assisted on others.  Life member, Laurie Thompson, rode along with Bruce Robb for 12 holes and enjoyed the course, the golf and the company.  On another great day for golf the results were;
Winner; Kevin Dunn (22) – 37 pts from Scott Williams (18) – 36 pts, Mick Nicholls Snr (23) and Michael Squire (7) – 33 pts
NTPs; 15th – Chris Vandervliet

Wednesday May 30th – Monthly Medal – Stroke & Putts

The heavy rain of the previous afternoon and evening saw the course a deal softer than in recent weeks.  The ongoing mild autumn weather saw good growth across the course.  Again players who were able to find the fairways and hit the greens in regulation gave themselves a real chance to card a decent score.  While everyone lost distance once the ball landed the softness of the course proved a real positive with all greens holding well and putting true.  On another mild, late autumn day the results were;

Winner & May Medalist; Darlene Baker – 90/17/73 from Elaine Scanlon – 105/31/75
Least putts; Pam Drummond – 23
