Saturday May 26th – Monthly Medal & 3rd Rd Silver Spoon – Stroke & Putts

A strong field took to the course for the May Medal on yet another lovely day for golf; 15C, sunny and with little to no wind.    Past captain, Tony Freeman, who has just moved to Echuca, turned up for his last hit for a while.  Members, Peter, Ned & Andrew Evans and Luke and Darren Newnham, who all find it difficult to get to the course on a regular basis, were very impressed by how the course was improving, “in leaps and bounds”  since they last played over a month ago.   The greens had been cut and rolled making them slightly faster than in previous weeks.  The women were on the course before 12.00 playing the 3rd round of the Silver Spoon  but the Medal field ran smoothly with few holdups.  The day came down to those who were able to keep to the fairways and putt with conviction to find the back of the cup.   Judging the pace of the greens was vital to posting a good score.  Evergreen veteran, Les Gaunt, again  showed just why he has been such a low handicapper for such a long time. On another excellent day for golf the results were;
3rd round of silver spoon;  Elaine  Scanlon – 104/31/73 from Pam Drummond – 108/30/78 & Jenny Hartley – 108/24/90
Winner & May Medalist; Les Gaunt – 80/9/71 from  Hugh Drummond – 93/21/72, Ron Walker – 96/23/73 & John Freestone – 93/20/73
NTP: 15th – Mal Mottran,  16th – Peter Evans
Least Putts; Les Gaunt – 26,  C/B from Mal Mottram.

Thursday May 24th – Strathbogie Bowl – Strathbogie G. C.

A Romsey contingent of Lorraine Robb, Wendy Gosden and Darlene Baker made their way to Strathbogie for the 2018 Strathbogie Bowl. The two hour journey commenced in overcast and cold conditions but on arrival at the Strathbogie course the sun was shining and the skies were clearing.  The course was in very good condition with evenly covered fairways.  As usual, the greens were particularly good.  Strathbogie is a long course and the softer, well grassed fairways stole distance from each shot. The Romsey team had a commendable total score of 90 points.

Winners of the 2018 Strathbogie Bowl; Marysville 98 pts.

Wednesday May 23rd – Stableford

The temperature hovered around 12C and a misty rain prevailed as the women headed out for a round of Stableford.  The general atmosphere was a convivial one as most players enjoyed the more relaxed format after the concentration involved with Club Championships and pennant matches in the last three weeks.  The course was quite heavy and scoring proved to be very difficult for most. On a cool, misty day the results were;
Winner; Jenny Hartley, from Darlene Baker & Elaine Scanlon

Tuesday May 22nd – Kyneton 4BBB – Kyneton G. C.

Pam Drummond and Wendy Gosden represented RGC at the 2018 Kyneton 4BBB.  The fairways were excellent but the greens “tricky”. Both RGC members enjoyed a good round in cloudy, cool conditions carding an excellent 37 pts.  As usual a great lunch was enjoyed by all.
The A grade winners scored 39 pts in a 3 way countback.

B grade was also a countback with Trentham defeating Kyneton with 40 pts. .

Monday May 21st – Rd 5 Women’s Pennant – Romsey G. C.

The 5th round of the women’s pennant saw RGC Vs Avenel and  Trentham Vs Lancefield.  A good result for RGC would see them secure a final’s spot.  After  preparations for the men’s pennant round on the previous day all that needed to be done was an early cut to the greens and some minior cleaning up here and there.   The course played long with very little run and the greens were fast which possibly suited Romsey better than Avenel who play sandscraps.  Weather was cool and threatened rain but day ended up being dry with no sunshine.  RGC’s team was very pleased to get a 3.5 /1.5  result.  Results were Darlene Baker –  W4/3, Beryl Cole –  Sq., Jenny Hartke – W4/2, Elaine Scanlon – W5/4 and Lorraine Robb –  L3/1.

The other match was  Trentham D Lancefield – 3/2 .

Next week, the last round before the final,  Romsey will be playing Lancefield on their home course.

Sunday May 20th – Rd 6 Men’s Pennant – Romsey G. C.

With our pennant division being a seven team competition the hosting club, Romsey, did not play.  The final round began on another still, cloud,y 12C day.  Groups were sent off the first and the 15th, this worked and resulted in a fairly smooth moving field. The club received plenty of positive feedback on the course and especially the state of the greens and how true they were running.  The day was one of lop-sided results with top team, Woodend going down to Lancefield and both Trentham and Kilmore having very strong wins.
Results for the day were:
Trentham D Mt Macedon 6.5/0.5
Kilmore D Hidden Valley 6.5/0.5
Lancefield D Woodend 5/2
Before the final round Woodend seemed assured of a place in the final but the other spot was up for grabs, between Trentham, Lancefield and Kilmore.  It was a close thing with Kilmore doing just enough to  edge out the other two teams.  The final  was played at Lancefield G. C. on Sunday May 27th.  Congratulations to Woodend who defeated Kilmore – 4/3
Many thanks to:
RGC would like to thank the following people for their efforts to make both the Club Championships and the final round of pennant so successful. Saturday May 19th – Rd 3 2018 Men’s Club Championships

The final round of the 2018 Men’s Club Championships began on a still, cloudy day with a mild 13C predicted.  Due to damp, spongy greens, it was decided not to roll them on Friday night, the 3rd was too wet to even mow.  All greens however, still played true and at a good pace, players were challenged by some tricky pin placements.

Michael Squire hit off with a 10 shot buffer but was quickly put under pressure by multiple-champion, Les Gaunt. Les managed to claw back several strokes over the front nine however, a cool head and steady play down the back nine, saw Michael consolidate his lead and move on to win the 2018 Club Championship.

The battle for B grade was no less thrilling. Mick Nicholls Jnr started the round with a two stroke lead which proved inadequate in holding back the steady play of Rob Rea. Rob played a seven stroke better round to take out B Grade by five strokes.

The John Jeffrey Shield, overall nett winner, proved to be the closest battle of the day.  Kevin Dunn started the day leading by one stroke over Michael Squire, their final scores were a tie with the shield to be decided by a count-back.

It was a tough day for golf, even with preferred lies through the green, only Les Gaunt was able to play to his handicap.  The day’s results were;
Winner; Les Gaunt – 81/9/72 from Rob Rea – 92/18/74, A Clement – 84/9/75, R Walker – 99/24/75 & P Scanlon – 107/32/75
NTP’s; 1st – S Williams, 16th – A Clement

Thursday May 17th – Alexandra Bowl – Alexandra G. C.

The weather for the Alexandra Bowl was near perfect; an eerily still and overcast day, voices could easily be heard across the course as players manoeuvred their way around the racetrack and golf course.  The recent rains had made the fairways were quite heavy and balls would pick up mud so preferred lie “to within a card length of the ball” was given .  The greens were more than challenging, putting was particularly tricky.  A deft touch was needed to chip anywhere near the hole to reduce the danger and ensure a short putt.  RGC was well represented by Pam Drummond, Darlene Baker and Jenny Hartley.  The 2018 Alexandra Bowl winners were;
 Yea  – Adrienne Anglin, Di Elliot and Karen Sangster – 94 points on a countback from Mansfield.

Wednesday May 15th – Rd 3 2018 Women’s Club Championship

The recent rain made conditions very different to the previous two rounds of the Club Championships. High pitched balls to the green held well but drives off the tee and on the fairway were  far shorter due to the heavy conditions.  There was a nip in the air meaning beanies and jumpers were a must and the intermittent drizzle was bothersome.  The greens were still fast having been mown on Tuesday (by member Wendy Gosden who has been having mowing tuition from Les Gaunt).  At the completion of the round members were joined by Life Member Helene Newnham and shared a meal in the clubhouse to celebrate another year of Championships and to congratulate the winners.   On a tricky morning for golf the results were;

Winner; Darlene Bake – r from Jenny Hartley –  on a C/B from Elaine Scanlon – .
Least Putts; Lorraine Robb –
The 2018 Romsey Women’s Champion; Darlene Baker – 279.
The 2018 Romsey Women’s Nett Champion; Jenny Hartley – 237.

RGC Women’s Capt Lorraine Robb with 2018 Champion Darlene Baker, Life Member Helene Newnham & 2018 Nett Champion Jenny Hartley.

Monday May 14th – Rd 4 Women’s Pennant – Avenel G. C

The fourth round of pennant was held at Avenel.  Avenal G. C. has sand scrapes instead of grass green so a quick recap of protocols and rules for scrapping the sand greens was given.  The field teed off in perfect weather conditions.  RGC had a great day picking up a 5/0 victory.  With two rounds to go this results places RGC in a good postion to make the final however, golf is often a fickle game and upsets can be very common. RGC results were; Darlene Baker – Wx, Beryl Cole – Wx, Jenny Hartley – Wx, Elaine Scanlon – Wx and Lorraine Robb – Wx.

The day’s overall results were;

Avenel D Lancefield – 3/2

Romsey D Trentham – 5/0.
