Saturday September 2nd – Stableford

The field assembled under cloudy skies with rain predicted, the course was still damp but the greens were surprisingly quick.  The wind proved to be quite testing, first it came in from the north then moved to the NW before switching back to the north.  The cold air and the soft fairways saw everyone lose distance off the tee and some of the holes with longer carries proved very challenging.  Despite the predictions of rain the afternoon remained clear and there was even a spot of sun here and there.  On a difficult day to post a good score only one player was able to play to his handicap.  The day’s results were

Winner; Andrew Laing (19) – 36 pts from Daniel Wright (4) – 34 pts & Anthony Lakey (22) – 33 pts

Women’s Winner; Darlene Baker (22) 33 pts

Next week, September 9th is the club’s Guest Day.  It is also a Golf For A Cause day ($10.00 entry with $5.00 going to Cancer Research)  The day includes the club’s Relative Pairs Shield.  This event is an RGC Shield event and is open to all golfers who hold a GA handicap.  Pairs are made up of people who have a family relationship, partner/partner, father/daughter, father in law/son in law etc.

It is sad to report that there has been a serious increase in vandalism at Romsey Park and on the golf course over the last weekend.  Five flags were stolen, distance markers pulled out of the ground, small trees ripped out of the ground and laid together and others just stolen; plants, bamboo stakes and protective cover.  To replace the flag poles and flags will cost the club over $250, the damage to the trees, some as thick as your arm is extremely disappointing.

Thursday August 31st – Broadford Bowl

Beryl Cole, Wendy Gosden and Darlene Baker represented Romsey Golf Club at the 2017 Broadford Bowl . Weather conditions were perfect; bright and sunny with not a breath of wind. There were preferred lies through the green and quite often clumps of mud had to be cleaned off the ball. The greens were quite fast and some, depending on what side of the hole you were on, were very tricky indeed. In a field of 56 golfers scoring was difficult with only four players scoring 30 or above.  Darlene managed to win nearest the pin on one of the par threes.

The 2017 Bowl  winners were a team from Broadford.  Everyone enjoyed a lovely lunch after the round.

Wednesday August 30th – August Medal – Stroke & Putts

The August Medal was played in very wet, cold conditions.  It was heavy going with large patches of mud and slush on the fairways.  The grass cover on the fairways is excellent at the moment so when relief from the casual water was taken a good lie was easily found. The intermittent rain caused havoc with brollies being put up and then down again many times over. Persisting through the cold and wet was a challenge and made scoring difficult. Results on the day;

Winner and August Medalist; Darlene Baker 104/25/82 from Jenny Hartley & Lorraine Robb
Men’s Winner; Hugh Williams – 109/26/83
Least putts; Hugh Williams – 30

Saturday August 26th – Monthly Medal Stroke & Putts

A strong field took to the course to contest the August Medal.  Play got under way beneath overcast skies and with a very cold westerly wind.  The rain late in the week saw many soft spots and even some casual  water.  The greens were again faster than in the past but a number of players were able to adapt their game to the conditions.  The cold air and soft fairways saw all players loose distance off the tee and the soft ground loud the greens required  accurate approach shots or golfers faced very challenging chips to the green.  The wind dropped about half way through the round and the sun came out making for a far more pleasant back nine.  On a very cool, slightly windy afternoon the results were;

Winner and August medalist; Mal Mottram – 80/12/68 fro Daniel Wright – 74/5/69, Bob McLennan – 85/13/72 & Michael McCarten – 84/12/72

NTPs; 1st – Bill McKee, 15th – Hugh Drummond & 16th – Andrew Laing

Least Putts; Daniel Wright – 24

Thursday August 24th – Avenel Salver

RGC was represented at the the Avenel Salver by Lorraine Robb and Wendy Gosden.  Wendy did not have good memories of sand-scrape golf but these may well be a thing of the past as her round, 38 stableford points, saw her take out both C Grade and the Veteran’s award.  Lorraine picked up 3rd in C Grade so a good day from RGC

Wednesday August 23rd – Stableford

The stableford round started early with an 8.30am  tee off to allow for an earlier than normal finish. The early start meant the going was quite heavy for the first few holes and the wet fairways made for a bit of a trudge for those pushing their buggies. Conditions did improve when the sun broke through and the golf was far more enjoyable for all.  After the round we were joined by Helene Newnham, one of the club’s Life Members,  Everyone shared a three course lunch to celebrate Helene’s 80th birthday. Much of the reminiscing included Helene’s early years in Romsey and her treasured involvement in the golf club. The day’s results were;

Women’s winner; Wendy Gosden – 32 Pts.
Nine-Hole Winner; Leila Beasley.
Men’s Winner; Michael McCarten – 30 Pts

Saturday August 19th – 4Ball Aggregate Stableford

The dire predictions for the afternoon’s weather looked to be coming true as the field teed off with a cold westerly wind and steady drizzle falling.  The drizzle lifted then returned now and again, the wind  fell away so that after about six holes the afternoon, whilst cold, was quite pleasant.  The whole course was wet with casual water on most holes.  The greens had been cut early in the morning so, at the beginning of the round, many players found themselves over putting and finishing up well passed the cup.  To bring home a competitive score it was vital to get good distance through the air and produce accurate approach shots as anything short or wide of the green meant for a difficult chip to get up and down in regulation.  On a clear, sunny, mostly still, very cold afternoon the results were;

Winners; Mal Mottram/Mick Nicholls Jnr – 66 pts from Anthony Lakey/Michael McCarten – 64 pts

NTP; 15th – Anthony Freeman

Wednesday August 16th – Stroke

The day began will players having to negotiate a strong, south-westerly wind, during the round it moved to the north and back again.  Putting was tricky with balls wobbling on the green and hair and hats being blown all over the place.  Cover on the fairways is excellent at the moment however overnight rain saw casual water on a number of fairways and at the front of the 6th green.  On a blustery morning the results were;

Winner; Darlene Baker – 97/22/75 from Elaine Scanlon – 111/32/79

Men’s Winner; Hugh Williams – 112/25/87

Least Putts; Darlene Baker – 32

Saturday August 12th – Stroke

Despite predictions of rain and some strong winds another good field took to the course for the club’s stroke competition.   The round got under way with clear skies and a gentle breeze from the SE.   Good weather and strong winds during the latter part of the week had dried the course considerably but some heavy showers earlier in the morning saw both fairways and greens wet and quite soft so posting a good score was again going to be a challenge.  A heavy squall hit the course as the final groups were finishing off the 18th so the warm rooms were very welcome.  A number of players had excellent from nines but the “wheels fell off” on the back nine pushing them out of contention.  The day’s winner was amongst this group but his back nine was not quite so disastrous, a few more two putts and his score could have been excellent.  On a beautiful late winter’s day the results were;

Winner; Michael Nicholls Jnr – 92/21/71 from Hugh Drummond – 95/23/72, Joh Freestone – 96/22/74 & Sherif Abdel-Sayed – 97/23/74

Women’s Winner; Elaine Scanlon – 110/32/78

NTPs; 15th – Hugh Drummond & 16th – Scott Williams

Wednesday August 9th – Stableford

Still, sunny conditions greeted the field as they headed out for the day’s Stableford round. The recent rains had seen casual water on many parts of the course but those who found the middle of the fairways  were generally rewarded with lush green lies and, for the first time in quite a few weeks, the birds had left the greens alone.  The good sized field enjoyed the day although the heavy condition made it difficult to card a good score.  The morning’s results were;

Winner; Wendy Gosden – 27 points C/B from Elaine Scanlon,Jenny Hartley – 26 points .

Nine hole winner; Leila Beasley .
