Tuesday 18th October – Trentham Plate Tournament

Jenny Hartley, Wendy Gosden and Elaine Scanlon  represented RGC at the 2017 Trentham Plate.  Due to poor weather forcing a reschedule the Plate was run as part of the Trentham Tournament this year.  The day was perfect; warm, still and sunny. Trentham’s course looked beautiful with all the flowering shrubs and trees including the spectacular rhodedrum on the 18th tee.  86 players participated in the event.  The RGC team found putting on the greens a bit of a challenge and one team member added the additional problem element, bunkers. Our team nett score of 243 was mid field however Jenny brought home the raffle.

Helen Dennett, Kilmore G. C., returned an 86 scratch  to take out Open Champion and Veronia O’Sullivan Woodend a 66 nett to win the silver tray for best nett score of the day. Lancefield G. C. won the Trentham plate with a 218 nett team score.

Saturday October 14th – 4Ball Multiplier Stableford

The round began on a beautiful, sunny mid spring afternoon, there was a steady northerly breeze blowing but nothing to really effect the golf.  The greens had recovered well from the scarifying and were generally true if a little slower than expected.  A great deal of work had been done to keep the rough under control by 22mm of rain during the week meant a few fairways had been too wet to be mown using the fairway mower so the rough mower was lowered and did a reasonable job.  As the round progressed the wind blew up and caused a few problems over the final nine holes.  The format, multiplier stableford saw some teams pick up 12 pts on one hole and zero on another.  Two teams ran neck and neck all afternoon and it was a fluffed putt on the 17th than made all  the difference.  On a stunning spring day the results were;

Winners; Michael McCarten (13)/Anthony Lakey (21) – 71 pts from Shannon Wright (14)/Michael Nicholls Jnr (22) – 70 pts.

Individual; Michael Nicholls Jnr (22) – 44 pts from Ron Walker (23) – 39 pts

NTPs; 15th – Jim Patton, 16th – Michael McCarten

Thursday October 12th – Doris Chambers Final – Sanctuary Lakes G. C.

Romsey Golf Club  was represented by Darlene Baker and Wendy Gosden at Sanctuary Lakes for the final of this state wide tournament. The day was overcast but warm with the wind only gusting on a few holes.  The fairways were in excellent condition and the greens were very slick causing more than a few problems for the field. The Darlene and Wendy managed to avoid most of the bunkers and, while two that did trap them, escape was secured and a score was registered for those holes.  On a very challenging course the RGC team scored a very creditable 33 pts, equal 8th on the day

Wednesday October 11th – 1st Rd – Singles K/O

The First Round of Singles Knockout  was played in very blustery conditions making for a” tough day at the office”.  Some players toured the rough a little too much and, if they found the few uncut areas, it was very thick more than challenging to get back on to the fairway with any length on the shot.  Those playing nine holes played a stroke event and counted putts.  Jenny Hartley  had a wonderful day, making the most of the conditions, recording the best round of the day, taking out nearest the pin on the third and having the least putts.  On a windswept morning the results were;
Leader; Jenny Hartley  103/31/72 from Darlene Baker 96/22/74 and Elaine Scanlon 113/33/80

NTPs; 3rd – Jenny Hartley

Least Putts; Jenny Hartley – 29

Saturday October 7th – Ambrose – Green Keeper’s Revenge

Golf began on a beautiful spring day with a gentle northerly breeze blowing.  After two weeks of sun and a little rain Romsey Park was in top nick however the growth across the course was astounding and members had to work very hard to keep the grass under control.  Green Keeper’s Revenge saw many pins in unusually challenging locations, a little too much power in the putt and the ball was well off the green.  Once players got to the greens they also had to compete against the deep scarifying so it was quite a challenge to post a good score; another  round of Ambrose seemed the perfect solution.  Teams of three or four took up the challenge.  The breeze blew up and moved the other NE causing problems on a number of holes.  A few teams had runs of birdies but were then forced to take that less that good drive just to meet the Ambrose rules.  The roughish greens and more than optimistic drives and approach shots found many groups in trouble looking for that miracle shot to save par.  On a beautiful spring day the results were;

Winners; Les Gaunt/JennyHartley/Bruce Robb/Hugh Drummond -74/11.5/62.5 from Dean Borg/Ash Jobe/Bill McKee – 74/10.3/63.7 & John Freestone/Ron Walker/Shannon Wright – 74/10/64

NTPs; 1st – Jenny Hartley & 15th – Les Gaunt

Thursday October 5th – Strathbogie Open

RGC members Wendy Gosden and Darlene Baker left bright and early to make the long journey to the Strathbogie Golf Club for their annual tournament.  The course was in magnificent condition with lush green fairways and very true and receptive greens.  Rain threatened for most of the round with quite dark clouds hovering for the entire day.  A drizzly rain broke through a couple of times and had the umbrellas going up and down and up again but was not really enough to dampen anyone’s sprit or seriously interfere with the golf.

Wendy finished with a good round c with a nett 74.   Darlene also produced an excellent round holing some long putts and driving very consistently to return 92/24/68.

This score was good enough to win the B Grade scratch event and also score four points in the Dalhousie “Player of the Year Award”.

Wednesday October 4th – Ambrose

Glorious spring weather greeted the golfers as they headed out to play the “Old Course”.  The recent scarifying of the greens continued to make holing out more than challenging so Ambrose over the twelve hole, par 45 of the “Old Course” was a perfect choice.  After the round many players headed out for a pleasant lunch at Soltan Pepper.  Results on the day were;

Winners; Wendy Gosden/Michael McCarten  49/8/41, from John Laing/John Freestone 52/9/43 & Jan Harver/Leila Beasley/Darlene Baker 58/11.5/46.5

Saturday September 30th – “Old Course” Ambrose

Light rain was falling as the players took to the 12 hole, par 45 Old Course.  The fairways were again in top nick however the recent scarifying of the greens meant that putting would be a bit of a gamble.  Putting across the scarify marks proved to be far better that putting up them.  The Ambrose format allowed players to be a bit more adventurous than during a normal round and some reaped the benefits while others just failed to clear that tall tree and dropped down among the roots.  It was a very enjoyable round with everyone on their way to watch the Grand Final by a little after 12.00 pm.  On a relaxed morning the results were;

Winners; Sherif Abdel-Sayed, Elaine Scanlon & Jim Patton – 43/8.6/34.4

NTPS; 8th – Darlene Baker, 9th – Jim Patton & 10th – Elaine Scanlon

Thursday September 27th – Isabelle Betts Memorial Trophy

Perfect spring weather greeted a field of 56 at the Isabella Betts Memorial Tournament in Yea.  Romsey Golf was represented by Wendy Gosden, Beryl Cole and Darlene Baker. Playing in groups of three the field moved well across the course with very few delays. Negotiating the railing of the horse racing track was an interesting aspect of the game but if you did happen to hit the rails you were able to replay the shot without penalty.  The course was in great condition; many of those who had played before feeling Yea G. C. was in the best they’d seen.  The greens were in good condition too with a few of them being quite tricky due to their slope and undulations.

Darlene had the best round of the day of the Romsey women with 97/23/74 also winning nearest the pin on the 2nd hole.

Wednesday September 27th – Stroke & Putts

Lovely spring weather greeted a small but determined group of women as they headed to the tee to playing stroke and record putts .   The growth across the course is astounding and many players found their excellent shot siting down on longish grass in the centre of the fairway.  A hardy group of volunteers were working across the course at the same time scarifying, topdressing, seeding and fertilising  the greens.  As with every year they do a great job rejuvenating the greens.  On a glorious spring morning the results were;
Winner; Darlene Baker – 101/23/78 from Beryl Cole – 105/26/79 & Jenny Hartley – 116/31/85
Least putts; Darlene Baker- 29
