A very strong field took to the course for the 2017 Macedon Ranges Spring Cup.  The event, sponsored by Drummond Golf, Niddrie was both an individual and club challenge event.  With both RGC and MMGC sharing the honours over the previous years it was a good chance for RGC to take bragging rights by beating MMGC on their home ground.  The round began under clear sunny conditions with a steady southerly wind for almost all the front nine.  MMGC was in wonderful condition, excellent fairway cover and well trimmed rough.  The greens were fast but once on line they putted very true.  Despite the conditions to was difficult to card a good score ad the teams event proved to be very lopsided with he locals recording a strong victory.  The day was played in good spirits, on a wonderful day for golf the results were;

A Grade Winner; Marcus Ward (MMGC) – 34 pts from Jerome Langmaid (MMGC) 33 pts

B Grade Winner; Bob Close (MMGC) – 40 pts from John Andrew (MMGC) 33 pts

Women’s Winner; Darlene Baker (RGC) – 32 pts from Beryl Cole (RGC) 27 pts

The round began with conditions near perfect for golf although the wind was a little chilly at times. It was very pleasing to see that the carry on quite a few holes had been mown closer to the tees which is good for the shorter hitters.
A strong field headed to the tee with the welcome return of the 9 hole-comp, a men’s comp and the regular 18 hole players .
There is very little run on the course at the moment with many areas of casual water. Scoring was tough but competition was close with countbacks required in both the men’s and women’s competitions. Results for the day were;

18 hole women’s winner; Beryl Cole – 28 points C/B Darlene Baker, with Lorraine Robb third.

Wendy Gosden and Darlene Baker represented RGC at the Captains’ and Presidents’ Day at Goonawarra G. C..  Sixty women took to the course in groups of 4, to play a round of Texan Ambrose.  With the two best scores were recorded on each hole there was potential for some large numbers at the endow the day.  Wendy again played a very good round scoring plenty of “three pointers”. Her highlight however was a twelve metre putt for birdie on the par three 7th – resulting in 2 for 5 points.

Winners on the day were a pair from Lancefield and their partners, they had an amazing score of 102 points.   Three teams including ours; Wendy, Darlene, Raewyn and Bev were equal second with 94 points.

Romsey Golf Club was represented by Denise O’Meara on Sunday 17th at the Nagambie Golf Club. The event was a 4-Person Ambrose Charity Day; “The Daniher Drive for Motor Neuron Disease”.  The course was in excellent condition and groups moved through quite well considering there were 160 players. Denise and her partners enjoyed a wonderful day of golf. The Nagambie club hoped to raise $5000 and at last count the total was $5900.

Heavy rain on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning saw the course looking wonderfully fresh and green but full of traps for the unwary golfer.  Great work earlier in the week saw almost all of Romsey Park mown and the rough under control.  All groups had to watch each shot carefully for fear that a ball would plug and disappear into the soft earth, if players agreed that a ball had landed in a specific area but it was unable to be found then a free drop was allowed.  A strong field took to the course with a steady westerly wind blowing as the round progressed the wind moved to the S and then the SW.  The wind, the cold air and soft fairways made for very difficult conditions and while a number of players had good front nines only a few could hold it together for the whole 18, a broken driver on the 2nd last hole sank one player and two balls into the dam on the final hole really sank another.  On a challenging afternoon the results were;

NTPs; 1st – Jim Patton, 15th – Mick Nicholls Jnr & 16th – Shannon Wright

A great day for the Euroa Bowl, a team from Hilltop won in mostly fine but occasionally wet weather.  There were preferred lies across the course which appeared to be very generous as the fairways were well grassed and not particularly wet. Considering the number of players, 75, the field moved particularly well with most groups finishing around 1.00 pm.

Romsey, represented by Beryl Cole, Wendy Gosden and Darlene Baker, had a commendable combined score of 95.  Wendy, who is playing great golf at the moment, enjoyed another wonderful round with an individual score of 36.

A strong field took to the 12-hole, “Old Course” for a round of mixed/women’s Canadian.  The new tee markers made and put in place by Trevor Turnham look great and thanks go to Trevor for his fine work.  Spring is certainly in the air with a heavy shower early in the round followed by full sunshine for the remainder. A strong westerly wind prevailed for most of the round making some holes easier but creating a strong headwind on others.

Players from the Dalhousie district who had won, or been runners-up, in the Royal Women’s Hospital 4BBB at their home club  converged on the Avenel Golf Course for a playoff to see who would represent Dalhousie District at the finals at Kew Golf Course in October.

Jan Harver and Darlene Baker were the Romsey winners with Elaine Scanlon and Kath Jekabsons the runners up at our club. Unfortunately Kath was unable to play today so the third pairing, Lorraine Robb and Wendy Gosden,  joined Jan and Darlene and played on the sand scrapes at Avenel .

Jan and Darlene had an enjoyable round of golf in lovely spring weather.  The very exciting news is that Wendy and Lorraine had a wonderful day combining extremely well to score 44 points and be declared the winners of the 2017 Dalhousie District Final of the Royal Women’s 4BBB.

The field assembled with conditions looking very promising, a little sun, clear sky and virtually no wind however, as the groups headed off to the tees, the cloud cover came in and the temperature dropped.  After a few holes the skies cleared and it was a very pleasant afternoon.  The rain earlier in the week meant that fairways had not been cut and the rough was heavier than usual causing many problems for any who strayed off line.  Heavy fairways and cold air saw longer than usual approach shots but, once on the green, players had to be careful as the greens were again faster than usual for RGC.  The “Relative Pairs Shield” looked to be a battle between the Scanlons, the Robbs and the Laings.  The Liangs had tasted success a number of times in the past and the hunger was still there.  In the men’s competition uneven numbers made for a few unusual pairings.  Four pairs had wonderful front nines but a good back nine was needed to take out the day and it was down to the final two holes before the eventual winners were able to break clear.  The day’s results were;

The day raised $105 for the Drummond Golf “Golf 4 A Cause” program, this program supports cancer research.

The decision; to play or or not to play, with rain pending, seemed an easy one to make, the sun was shining as the field headed for the first tee!  The first eight holes, although heavy going, were pleasant  enough but then the rain came down, the umbrellas went up and the wind started to blow.  After the ninth all players decided to persevere despite the intermittent, heavy rain and strong winds; scoring became a lot more difficult on the back nine. The competition for the day, 4B Multiplier often saw one player have great hole only for their partner to wipe thus no points on that hole.  On a wet and windy day the results were;
