Thursday May 10th – Euroa Tournament – Euroa G. C.

On May 10th RGC members Lorraine Robb and Beryl Cole ventured to Euroa G. C. for their 2018 tournament.  The day’s forecast was for a top temp of 12C with gusting winds and thunderstorms however Romsey, if cold, was in bright sunshine and it was more than a little surprising to have this weather continue at Euro for most of the day.  Clouds threatened towards the end of the round but the majority of the field were in prior to the first shower, so, a cold day, but not the nasty weather that was predicted. The course was in the usual top condition so scores were reasonably good. The 2018 winner was;

Gail Leigh (Marysville); 78.

The RGC team enjoyed the day & both returned a very creditable 75 nett.

Wednesday May 9th – Rd 3 2018 Women’s Club Championships

The 2nd round of the 2018 Club Championship was played on our beautifully manicured course on a day with 20 – 30 Kph winds from the NW and with a top temperature of around 15C. The greens had been recently mown and were in tip top condition. The fairways too were well prepared, the whole course is a credit to the many volunteers who spend endless hours working to improve both the golf course and Romsey Park for the enjoyment of all. We welcomed a visitor (and past member) Shirley Shelton to our comp and she appreciated the well grassed tees and lovely greens.  She also commented on the very positive changes to both the course and Romsey Park since she was a member at RGC.  On a wonderful late autumn day the results were;
Winner; Darlene Baker – 89/16/73 from Lorraine Robb – 112/31/81 C/B over Jenny Hartley – 105/34/81 C/B
Nine Hole Comp; Leila Beasley (41) – 15 points from Jan Harver (43)  – 13 points

Monday May 7th – Rd 3 Women’s Pennant – Trentham G. C.

Monday 7th May, the Romsey team played Trentham at Trentham. Home ground advantage was too much for us and we  unfortunately went down 4/1.  Scores for Romsey were; Darlene Baker – L2Down, Beryl Cole – W1Up, Jenny Hartley – L6/5, Wendy Gosden –  L6/5 and Lorraine Robb – L5/3. RGC plays Trentham at Avenel next and we hope we can manage the sand scrapes better than them and pick up a win.

Sunday May 6th – Rd 6 Men’s Pennant – Mt Macedon G. C.

Another magic day for golf with some very one sided results. Mt Macedon course was in tip top shape, greens fast and true and good coverage on the fairways for this time of the year.  While it was a slow round with many hold ups on tees the wait in the sun was very pleasant.  Trentham had a few team changes and their players had a day out against RGC; forcing pars and birdies for halves and making the day a very tough battle.   Woodend proved its dominance yet again with a 6/1 win over Kilmore and Lancefield have given themselves a chance of a finals spot, with Kilmore and Trentham. Kilmore in the strongest position having a half win extra in their pockets over the other teams with one round to play. Romsey will be hosting the final round on the 20th.  RGC results were; Andrew Laing – L5/3, Scott Williams – L5/3, Michael McCarten – L3/1, Mick Nicholls Jnr – L7/6, Rob Rea – L6/5, Hugh Drummond – W4/2 & Chris vanDerVliet – L6/5

The day’s overall results were;

Trentham D Romsey – 6/1

Woodend D Kilmore – 6/1

Lancefield D Trentham – 5/2

Saturday May 5th – Rd 1 2018 Men’s Club Championships

Yet another pleasant day for the 1st round of the 2018 men’s championships, not much breeze and a temperature of 19C.  The heavy rain of Thursday evening had hardly softened the fairways but the greens had enjoyed the additional moisture.  After the long term dry spell there was varying cover on the fairways so relief, to a club length, was given.  All players who were able to drive straight enjoyed good distance off  the tee.  The greens were still running true with a good pace, but not as quite  as fast as last week. Scores depicted a course that is playing hard for this time of the year and judging pace on the greens still has a few out of sorts. Attacking the greens with loft is the preferable shot to play as the greens were releasing the ball softly.  On one more wonderful day for golf the scores were;

The Day’s Winner; Michael Squires – 78/7/71 from Mal Mottram – 83/11/72 & Rob Rea – 91/18 73

NTP: 1st – Les Gaunt, 15th – Hugh Drummond & 16th – Andrew Clement
After Round One of the Championships the leaders are;
A Grade; Michael Squires – 78 from Mal Mottram – 83
B Grade; Rob Rea – 91 from Mick Nicholls Jnr – 94

Thursday May 3rd – Yea Open – Bowl G. C.

RGC was represented by Beryl Cole, Wendy Gosden and Darlene Baker at the 2018 Yea Bowl.  On a beautifully, sunny day a  field of 68 players tackled the race track intertwined course. The greens were in very good condition and were generally true and straight.   At the end f the round, during an enjoyable lunch of soup, savouries and splendid desserts Norma Tobias, a 92 year old Yea Life Member, presented the trophies and regaled the players with some local golfing history and reminisces.  There were some very good scores returned with the A Grade winner determined by a countback as two players had scored 40 points. Gail Leigh (9) was the eventual winner there.
The winners of the Bowl were the team from RACV Healesville with a combined score of 104 pts.

Wednesday May 2nd – Rd 1 2018 Women’s Club Championships

Yet another late autumn day that was virtually perfect for golf.  Just a gentle breeze and the sun shining through.  Well, if it is not going to rain it had may as well be sunny.  With no autumn break and the late onset of winter there was still plenty of run on the fairways with preferred lies allowed to one club length. Driving down the centre was, as always, a considerable advantage and any player who found the middle was well rewarded. The greens were somewhat slower than over the weekend but were in great condition; well grassed and putting very true.  Competition was fierce during the 1st round of the club champs and count backs needed to separate the days top three handicap results.  On another beautiful morning for golf the results were;

Winner; Wendy Gosden – 102/30/72, c/b from Jenny Hartley – 97/25/72, c/b from  Elaine Scanlon – 104/32/72.

Stroke scores after Rd 1; Darlene Baker – 91, Jenny Hartley – 97, Beryl Cole – 98 & Wendy Gosden – 102.

Monday April 30th – Rd 2 Women’s Pennant – Lancefield G. C.

Lancefield G. C. hosted the second round of pennant for section 3.  A perfect day for golf, jumpers off and no breeze.  The course was in good condition with fast greens. The green keeper had been busy and double cutting Saturday and again on Sunday prior to the men’s pennant and again on Monday morning for the women’s pennant.  Romsey played Avenel and the match was squared at 2.5 a piece. With the result in the balance there were many nervous golfers as we all looked on from the clubroom balcony to watch Jenny square her match on the 18th. RGC results were; Darlene Baker – W6/5,  Beryl Cole – W 5/4, Wendy Gosden – L2DownPam Drummond – L5/4 & Jenny Hartley – Square. Next week Romsey play Trentham at Trentham

The day’s results were;

Lancefield D  Trentham – 4/1.

Romsey Vs Avenel – Square 2.5/2.5

Sunday April 29th – Rd 5 Men’s Pennant – Kilmore G. C.

The fine weather, a sunny and fairly still day, continued as the teams assembled at Kilmore G. C. for round 4 of the 2018 pennant season.  Romsey was taking on leaders Woodend and it was always going to be a hard battle as Woodend has one of its strongest teams in years and is still undefeated. Kilmore golf course showed serious damage from birds with several greens having roped off sections that were regrowing and two temporary greens. It was a challenge for all players and even with several changes to the team Woodend just proved too strong.  RGC results were; Shannon Wright –L8/7, Mal Mottram – L2Down, Michael McCarten – L3/1, Mick Nicholls Jnr – L2/1, Chris vanDerVliet- L2Down, Rob Rea – W1Up & John Freestone – W3/2

Overall results were;

Woodend D Romsey – 5/2

Lancefield D Trentham – 4/3

Hidden Valley D Mt Macedon – 6/1

Saturday April 28th – Monthly Medal – Stroke & Puts

The April Monthly Medal, men and women, drew a large field and players headed out to the tees on yet another still, glorious afternoon for golf. The day also saw the last round of the Algie Mitchell Shield with Rob Rea and Jim Patton fighting out the final.  The fairways were still hard and dry allowing all payers to get great run the greens and surrounds were a different matter. With the Little Corellas finally moving on the repairs to the greens were  really taking root and all players were surprised by the speed of the closely cut and rolled greens.  A  large number of putts ended up shooting well passed the cup, others players, falling to read the new breaks, also ended up well passed their intended destination. Despite the wonderful conditions only three men and one women broke their handicaps.  On another dry, late autumn day the results were;
Men;
A Grade;  Robert  McLennan 83/12/71
B Grade & Monthly Medallist: Kevin Dunn 95/25/70 from Sherif Abdel Sayed 94/23/71
