Thursday May 3rd – Yea Open – Bowl G. C.

RGC was represented by Beryl Cole, Wendy Gosden and Darlene Baker at the 2018 Yea Bowl.  On a beautifully, sunny day a  field of 68 players tackled the race track intertwined course. The greens were in very good condition and were generally true and straight.   At the end f the round, during an enjoyable lunch of soup, savouries and splendid desserts Norma Tobias, a 92 year old Yea Life Member, presented the trophies and regaled the players with some local golfing history and reminisces.  There were some very good scores returned with the A Grade winner determined by a countback as two players had scored 40 points. Gail Leigh (9) was the eventual winner there.
The winners of the Bowl were the team from RACV Healesville with a combined score of 104 pts.

Wednesday May 2nd – Rd 1 2018 Women’s Club Championships

Yet another late autumn day that was virtually perfect for golf.  Just a gentle breeze and the sun shining through.  Well, if it is not going to rain it had may as well be sunny.  With no autumn break and the late onset of winter there was still plenty of run on the fairways with preferred lies allowed to one club length. Driving down the centre was, as always, a considerable advantage and any player who found the middle was well rewarded. The greens were somewhat slower than over the weekend but were in great condition; well grassed and putting very true.  Competition was fierce during the 1st round of the club champs and count backs needed to separate the days top three handicap results.  On another beautiful morning for golf the results were;

Winner; Wendy Gosden – 102/30/72, c/b from Jenny Hartley – 97/25/72, c/b from  Elaine Scanlon – 104/32/72.

Stroke scores after Rd 1; Darlene Baker – 91, Jenny Hartley – 97, Beryl Cole – 98 & Wendy Gosden – 102.

Monday April 30th – Rd 2 Women’s Pennant – Lancefield G. C.

Lancefield G. C. hosted the second round of pennant for section 3.  A perfect day for golf, jumpers off and no breeze.  The course was in good condition with fast greens. The green keeper had been busy and double cutting Saturday and again on Sunday prior to the men’s pennant and again on Monday morning for the women’s pennant.  Romsey played Avenel and the match was squared at 2.5 a piece. With the result in the balance there were many nervous golfers as we all looked on from the clubroom balcony to watch Jenny square her match on the 18th. RGC results were; Darlene Baker – W6/5,  Beryl Cole – W 5/4, Wendy Gosden – L2DownPam Drummond – L5/4 & Jenny Hartley – Square. Next week Romsey play Trentham at Trentham

The day’s results were;

Lancefield D  Trentham – 4/1.

Romsey Vs Avenel – Square 2.5/2.5

Sunday April 29th – Rd 5 Men’s Pennant – Kilmore G. C.

The fine weather, a sunny and fairly still day, continued as the teams assembled at Kilmore G. C. for round 4 of the 2018 pennant season.  Romsey was taking on leaders Woodend and it was always going to be a hard battle as Woodend has one of its strongest teams in years and is still undefeated. Kilmore golf course showed serious damage from birds with several greens having roped off sections that were regrowing and two temporary greens. It was a challenge for all players and even with several changes to the team Woodend just proved too strong.  RGC results were; Shannon Wright –L8/7, Mal Mottram – L2Down, Michael McCarten – L3/1, Mick Nicholls Jnr – L2/1, Chris vanDerVliet- L2Down, Rob Rea – W1Up & John Freestone – W3/2

Overall results were;

Woodend D Romsey – 5/2

Lancefield D Trentham – 4/3

Hidden Valley D Mt Macedon – 6/1

Saturday April 28th – Monthly Medal – Stroke & Puts

The April Monthly Medal, men and women, drew a large field and players headed out to the tees on yet another still, glorious afternoon for golf. The day also saw the last round of the Algie Mitchell Shield with Rob Rea and Jim Patton fighting out the final.  The fairways were still hard and dry allowing all payers to get great run the greens and surrounds were a different matter. With the Little Corellas finally moving on the repairs to the greens were  really taking root and all players were surprised by the speed of the closely cut and rolled greens.  A  large number of putts ended up shooting well passed the cup, others players, falling to read the new breaks, also ended up well passed their intended destination. Despite the wonderful conditions only three men and one women broke their handicaps.  On another dry, late autumn day the results were;
Men;
A Grade;  Robert  McLennan 83/12/71
B Grade & Monthly Medallist: Kevin Dunn 95/25/70 from Sherif Abdel Sayed 94/23/71
Women

Final of the Algie Mitchell

Sunday April 22nd – Men’s Pennant Rd 4 – Woodend G. C.

Another magic day for golf however, one that found most of of the players struggling with the slick pace of the greens.  Even a small tap from the back of a green could find you rolling off on the other side. The Woodend course was in great shape and despite some less than exemplary work around the greens everyone enjoyed the day.  RGC battled last year’s pennant winners, Kilmore and their experience shone through.  The fast greens were just handled better by Kilmore to hand us a 6/1 loss.  This has opened up the field again and RGC really need a good win against Woodend next weekend to get back to the top of the table.  RGC results were;  Rob Rea – , John Freestone – , Ron Walker – , Scott Williams – , Mick Nicholls Jnr – , Chris vanDerVliet –  & Hugh Drummond – .
The complete day’s results were;

Hidden Valley  V  Trentham –

Lancefield  V  Mt Macedon –

Romsey  L  Kilmore – 6/1

Saturday April 21st – Relative Pairs – 4BBB Stableford

Another fantastic day for golf, sunny and little to no wind. The greens were in some of the best condition ever for this time of the year, and after being cut and rolled late Friday they played very true but with the fastest pace we have seen since last summer. Club length relief still being given on the fairways which are still struggling due to lack of rain. The club very pleased to have a strong field for the Relative Pairs shield, (a club shield).   There were some classy scores many over 40 points with 46 points to get a ball.  Other pairs also played 4BBB Stableford.  On a stunning day for golf the results were;
Winners of the 2018 Relative Pair’s Shield; Darren (10)/Cameron (24) Newnham – 49 points – (23 front & 26 in back), Cameron holing putts from all parts of the green, C/B from Bruce (30)/Lorraine (34) Robb. Thursday April 19th – Broadford Bowl – Broadford G. C.

A field of 46 women competed in Broadford Golf Club’s 2018 Women’s Tournament. Players were divided into three grades; A Grade who played stroke and B + C Grades who played Stableford.  The course was in very good condition with reward for staying on the well grassed fairways, any who wandered off the fairway paid the price among the many trees usually being forced to chip out sideways. The greens were generally good and quite slick with bold putts running well through when missing the cup.  RGC was well represented by Denise O’Meara, Beryl Cole, Lorraine Robb, Jenny Hartley and Darlene Baker.
The day’s Scratch Winner; Kerry Peterson ( 12)83 from Cheryl Anderson (8) 84.
Other winners on the day were
A Grade Nett; Adrienne Anglin  16/88/72
B Grade; Bev Bellman (26) 36 points
C Grade; Lorraine Robb (33) 38 points A great score by Lorraine which also saw her receive 5 points in the DDGA PoTY award.

Wednesday April 18th – RWH 4BBB – Stableford

Members played the Romsey round of the 2018 Royal Women’s Hospital 4BBB.  These events are played at participating clubs throughout the year with the winner and runners-up playing off in their districts for a chance to play in the state finals later in the season.  There was an excellent field with five groups of women playing the 4BBB.  The men played a Stableford round with another pairing of men recording scores for handicap purposes. Results for the RWH 4BBB were extremely close with two points separating all five teams so there were count backs aplenty.  The day’s results were;
RWH 4BBB Winners; Pam Drummond (31)/Jenny Hartley (25) –  39 points from Beryl Cole(24)/Denise O’Meara (45) – 38 points  C/B Lorraine Robb (34)/Jan Harver (45) – 38 points  C/B Elaine Scanlon (32)/Wendy Gosden(30) – 38 points, Darlene Baker (17)/Leila Beasley(41) – 37 points

Monday April 16th – Women’s Pennant Rd 1 – Romsey G. C.

On Monday 16 April the DDGA Women’s pennant competition commenced.  Romsey were hosting  Section 3 and were drawn to play Lancefield.  After RGC not having a pennant side for several years it was a big thrill to start with a convincing 4/1 win. When you are playing at home local knowledge certainly helps.

Individual scores were; Darlene Baker; W-4/3, Beryl Cole; W-2up, Jenny Hartley; W– 6/5 and Lorraine Robb; W– 3/2.
