Thursday April 28th – Alexandra Tournament

Four Romsey golfers headed to Alexandra for their Annual Tournament . (Four golfers, two cars, only one of which did not get lost on the return journey!!) The trip over caused the frost warning to go off three times in the car recording temps below 3° and that did not improve on arrival.   The heavy fog on the first tee became heavier and denser and chillier before finally lifting after 9 holes; hitting the ball out of sight was a common occurrence for the first half of the day.
The course was in good nick, the racing track was well mown, the rough was low and the fairways pretty good. A few of the greens were a bit tricky but that is part of the challenge at Alex.
Lunch was very enjoyable and the camaraderie enjoyed by all, so overall an enjoyable day.
The Alexandra Golf Club Ladies Open Tournament was won by Sandy Wicking (Kilmore) 86 scratch, well done Sandy.
Beryl was the best of the Romsey contingent winning 1 point for Player of the Year with a Nett 74, with Darlene, Jenny and Wendy close behind.

Wednesday April 28th – April M deal, Stroke & Putts

Plenty of great golf played in the Women’s Monthly Medal in near perfect conditions.  There  was quite a bit of run on some fairways and the greens are recovering well from the recent works. Monday April 26th – Women’s Pennant Rd 1

In the first round of the DDGA Women’s Pennant the Romsey team travelled to Euroa to compete against Lancefield in Division 2.   Being north of the divide the weather was lovely and sunny with a slight breeze. The course was in great condition with lush fairways and true greens.   Competition was fierce but friendly with all golfers playing in good spirits. After many saving chips and clutch putts the golfing gods could not decide an overall winner with the match being squared at 21/2.5 matches each. A scrumptious lunch awaited players after the round and was much appreciated.

Individual RGC results: Darlene Baker – W3/2,  Jenny Hartley –  W1 up, Wendy Gosden –  L1 down, Beryl Cole –  L3/2
Elaine Scanlon – AllSq

Overall Results;

Broadford Vs Trentham – All Sq 2.5 each

Romsey Vs Lancefield – All Sq 2.5 each

Saturday April 24th – April Medal, Stroke &Putts

The April Medal drew a strong field on a cool, overcast afternoon.  For a short time the sun came out and the wind blew in from the west but, after the first five of six holes, conditions settled, the clouds came back and the jumpers went back on .    The greens had recovered very well from the corellas and from the recent scarifying but the odd ball did get stuck in a line and behave a little unorthodoxly, much to the chagrin of the odd golfer.  The course was again in top condition with only a few bare patches on one or two fairways.  While a number of players had excellent front or back nines it was again up to a small group who were able to play consistent golf  across the whole 18 holes and bring home a good score.

Winner & April Medalist; Rob Rea – 89/20/69 CB from Mal Mottram – 76/7/69, Bob McLennan – 88/16/72, Anthony Lakey – 93/21/72

NTPs; 1st – Mal Mottram, 16th – Keith Hocking

Least Putts; Mick Nicholls Snr – 27

Thursday April 22nd – Broadford Tournament – Broadford G. C.

Romsey golf club sent five golfers along to the Broadford Tournament, a great effort by our small club.
The weather, although chilly, was kind and the looming storm clouds passed by. The course had quite a bit of run and the greens were very tricky to say the least!   Many a golfer had a lunch time story of putting off the green from above the hole. Those who conquered the greens scored the best of the day. Lunch was lovely and the hospitality great. Playing the course was good preparation for those who will be soon playing a pennant match at Broadford.
Cheryle Andersen (Kilmore) had the best scratch score of 86 to win the Scratch trophy, Cheryle is playing some great golf at the moment having previously won the A Grade at Seymour.
Grade winners were Glenda Woods  (Seymour), Pam Jarvis (Seymour) and Bev Bellman (Marysville).
Beryl, Jenny and Elaine enjoyed their outing, the golf and the hospitality as of course did the other two, with Darlene and Wendy both looking forward to playing a bit better when next on this course

Wednesday April 21st – Stroke (3rd Rd Silver Spoon)

Winter woolies, including beanies, were the choice early in the round as the temperature hovered around 4°, but by the time all players had finished the sun was shining and the Mercury had managed to reach 14C.   The lack of wind made conditions quite pleasant despite the chill. A field of 12 took the course for a daily Stroke round, with the women also playing the third round of the Silver Spoon.  Some great, consistent golf was played by many especially Jenny Hartley and Rob Slade who both recorded a Nett 70 – well done.  Jenny managed to secure the win on countback, also taking home the Silver Spoon round.
Rose Scanlon points went to Jenny – 3 points, Lis Manktelow – 2 points (Lis played in the running comp which commenced on Saturday) and Wendy – 1 point.

Daily Comp Results
1st; Jenny Hartley – 93/23/70    c/b
2nd; Rob Slade – 86/16/70
3rd; John Freestone – 95/20/75

NTP; 3rd – Darlene Baker

Sunday April 18th – Men’s Pennant Rd 4

It was a cool,  still day at Woodend G. C. for the 4th round of pennant.  The course was in top nick with well grassed fairways and excellent greens.  This was “moving round” where clubs could get a break on the others or clubs could push themselves up the ladder and back into contention.  Romsey took on Hidden Valley, Romsey’s results were;

Mal Mottram –L2Dn, Mitch Atlas – W5/4 Davey Kenney – L4/5  Scott Williams – W3/2 Steve Wilkins – Sq Chris vanDerVleit – L2/1 Keith Hocking – W-Walkover

Overall results were;

Romsey All Sq Hidden Valley – 3.5/3.5

Woodend D Trentham – 6/1

Mt Macedon D Kilmore – 4/3

Saturday April 17th – Stroke

The round began under still, sunny conditions.  The recent scarifying meant that the greens were a little challenging but everyone faced the same conditions.  As the round progressed the wind blew up and the air became much colder.  This had little effect on Shannon Wright, who after an ordinary first nine blasted four birdies on the back nine to come in with a 37, one over the card.  However it was a day where steady and consistent golf was what was required.  On a cool, gusting afternoon the results were;

Winner; Mal Mottram – 78/8/70 from Mick Squire – 75/3/72 & Steve Wilkins – 88/16/72

NTPs; 1st – Ralph Senn, 15th – Kev Dunn & 16th Steve Wilkins

Thursday April 15th – Phyllis Williams Bowl, Seymour G. C.

Great day at Seymour with a field of 71 golfers for their Phyllis Williams Bowl. Romsey GC had five representatives. Wendy, Jenny and Darlene were attempting to defend their title from 2020 but unfortunately were unable to take back to back titles. Elaine and Beryl also played as individual entries. Darlene managed to take home the nearest the pin prize on the 170 metre, par 3 , 12th.
The home course advantage proved to be invaluable as Seymour teams took out the runner up and winning scores, well done to those teams.

Wednesday April 14th – Stableford (11 holes)

Our hardy volunteers continue with their improvements/maintenance schedule.  All greens had been scarified, seeded, fertilised and top dressed on Tuesday.  The sun was out and there was a good breeze from the NW.  The Wednesday contingent had a fun day of Stableford while the greens had their drying sand rubbed in.  Eleven holes were played and even though the greens were heavy with sand, everyone expected the greens to be slow but strong putts usually went well passed the cup, scoring was quite good and the golf was enjoyed by all.
Shirley Shelton had a lovely round and best score of the day.  On a sunny morning the results were;
1st; Shirley Shelton (24) – 19 points
2nd; Lorraine Robb (42) – 18 pts  c/b
3rd; Wendy Gosden (26) – 18 pts
