Saturday June 19th – 4BBB Stroke

With another 25mm  on Friday night on an already wet course and with water flowing in from the cricket/football oval everyone was able to see the success of last year’s drainage and levelling works.  While there were a few low spots with casual water the vast majority of the course was dryish and firm under foot.  The field teed off on a cold afternoon with little sun and a 25 – 30kph wind from the SSW.  All players watched each shot carefully to see the landing area and help search for plugged balls however the groups moved at a good pace.  Despite the wind and the soft course there was some excellent golf played.  On a cool, windy afternoon the results were;

Winners; Anthony Lakey/Mick Nicholls Jnr – 64 C/B from Andrew Clement/Craig Sandy

NTPs; 1st – Rob Slade, 15th & 16th – Craig Sandy

Monday June 14th – Queens Birthday Ambrose

Play began under still, slightly overcast conditions.  There was a chill in the air early but, thankfully, there was no wind to drive the temperature down; despite the weather there was another strong turn-out.  The round of Ambrose suited the conditions allowing everyone to keep moving, once they had found their ball, and then regroup for the next shot.  As expected with the format there was some excellent scoring from just about all groups but the winners really took on the course and returned an excellent score.  On a chilly morning the results were;

Winners; Jenny Hartley/Sherif Abdel-Sayed/Wendy Gosden/Davie Kenney – 72/11.875/60.125

NTPs; 1st – Davie Kenney & 15th – Jason Langton.

Saturday June 12th – Two Players Ambrose

With a number of members unable to travel to RGC and the 100mm+ of rain during the week it was decided to hold the Medal of Medalists over and to play a round of two player Ambrose.   Despite the heavy rain the drainage works of last year had seen almost all the surface water get into the dams and then, once they filled, out of the park.  There was some casual water here and there but generally the course had held up very well.  The damage to the course’s trees was very evident with piles of broken branches and felled trees in the middle of the park awaiting cleaning up for firewood and then burning.  Many thanks to Mal, Sevi and Tony for their hard work clearing the course and repairing damage on Friday.  An assessor from MRSC also visited and marked a number of trees that will be removed.  Conditions were cool and still but cold air and soft fairways saw everyone loose distance off the tee.  Once again distance in the air was all important. The sun shone through for the first few holes then the cloud arrived and the jumpers went on.  Some excellent golf was played.  On a still, chilly afternoon the results were;

Winners; Mal Mottram/Craig Sandy – 63.75 from Josh & Mick Squire – 64.25

NTPs; 1st – Jim Patton, 15th – Jason Langton & 16th Mick Squire

Saturday June 5th – Social Golf

With many people just happy to get out to walk the Park and play a few shots there was a great turn-out for the club’s Social Golf round.  While there was no competition rounds could be handicapped so most players were fairly serious.  A few others just lined up, played their shot, had a socially distanced chat and then hit again.  The sun never really got up and the very cold  N/NW wind chilled everyone to the bone.  Still, it was great to be able to get out on the park, have a hit and a chat with other members.  Fingers crossed we can get on top of this outbreak and things will get back to normal.

Thursday May 27th – Strathbogie Bowl

The Strathbogie Bowl was held on a chilly but rain free day.   Scoring was particularly good with many players scoring at or about their handicaps on a course that was very well prepared.  Romsey’s team of Wendy Gosden (34), Jenny Hartley (34) and Darlene Baker (28) scored 96 which was commendable. Beryl Cole also represented Romsey and had a welcome return to form scoring 34 Stableford points.

Winners; Alexandra with a combined score of 108 pts on a count back from Kilmore.

Wednesday May 26th – May Medal & Medal of Medalists- Stroke & Putts

Wendy Gosden had a lovely day on the golf course winning the daily comp from Sherif Abdel- Sayed (2nd) and Steve Wilkins (3rd). Conditions were typical for autumn golf with the sun trying it’s hardest to creep through the clouds and the wind abating to a gentle breeze. Temperatures didn’t get much above 10° and the overnight rain made for soft areas on the fairways and consequently there was not much run. Putting was consistent, with those bold enough to attack the holes rewarded with a true roll into the hole.  The May Medal and the Medal of Medalists is a running competition with final results after Saturday’s round.  The day’s results;
1st;  Wendy Gosden – 102/27/75
2nd;  Sherif Abdel-Sayed – 100/24/76
3rd;  Steve Wilkins – 89/12/77  C/B Darlene Baker

Monday May 24th – Rd 5 2021 Women’s Pennant

Romsey Golf Club hosted the final round of Women’s Division 2 Pennant, which eventually determined which club would play in the Final against Romsey.  The competition was tight with three of the four teams in with a chance of getting to the final.  Trentham defeated Euroa 3 1/2 – 1 1/2 and Broadford had their first win defeating Lancefield by the same margin.
The Euroa team had a few members who hadn’t played at Romsey before and they were complimentary about the condition of the course. The golfers who were familiar with the course thanked Romsey on presenting the course in tiptop condition and commented on the surprising speed of the greens!
The win to Trentham took them to equal second on the ladder with a count-back of ‘games won‘ needed to differentiate them from Lancefield, with Lancefield winning that count-back by the smallest of margins.   On a top day for golf the results were;

Broadford D Lancefield – 3.5/1.5

Trentham D Euroa – 3.5/1.5

The Final, On Monday May 31st June 7th at Euroa G. C., will be:

Romsey Vs Lancefield

Sunday May 23rd – DDGA Men’s Pennant Finals – Whittlesea G. C.

For the first time in a number of years RGC had made the Men’s Pennant Final.  Whittlesea G. C., a little over 6,000m long with many water hazards was going to test all players.  The day was perfect with plenty of sun and almost no wind however, the course was a little soft in places.  Laying up on the par 5s was the smart move but many golfers decided to go for the green in two and came to grief in the water.  It was not a good day for RGC with the team losing to Hidden Valley 5.5/1.5.  RGC results were;

Losses to; Chris vanDerVliet, Keith Hocking, Dave Kenney, Steve Wilkins, All Sq; Mal Mottram and Win to Mitch Atlas.

The whole team is to be congratulated on a great year.  The whole club is proud of their performance.

Saturday May 22nd – Relative Pairs – 4BBB Stableford

After a mild frost followed by steady sun and virtually no wind the conditions were almost perfect for the 2021 Relative Pairs Shield.  The usual suspects, the Laings and Robbs were a strong chance but newcomers, the Squires and Bakers were not going to lie down.  The remainder of the field also played 4BBB Stableford and shouts of excitement as a birdie dropped or  of anguish as the ball lipped out echoed across the course.  On a wonderful day for golf the results were;

Relative Pairs Winners; Josh/Mick Squire – 43 pts, John/Andrew Laing – 40pts,

Other good scores; Mick Nicholls Jnr/Mitch Atlas – 39pts,

NTPs;   15th – Mal Mottram & 16th – Mitch Atlas

Wednesday May 19th – Rd 3 2021 Women’s Club Championships

The third and final round of Club Championships was played in fine, but windy, autumn weather. Along with those completing the championship there were others playing 9 holes, some social golfers and another group in the daily comp, a total of 15 on the course.
The daily Competition results;

Winner; Steve Wilkins – 71,

2nd; Lis Manktelow – 77

3rd; Sherif Abdel Sayed (78).

Least putts; Steve Wilkins – 28.
The 2021 Club Champion, with the best score over the three weeks, was Darlene Baker (17) – 286 with Jenny Hartley second.

Jenny was the winner of the Nett Championship – 234 closely followed by Elaine Scanlon.

Well done to all who participated in the three rounds and congratulations to Darlene and Jenny.
