Wednesday October 30th – Monthly Medal & Medal of Medallists

A beautiful summery day for the October Monthly Medal AND2018/19 Medal of Medallists.  With the temperature in the high 20s for most of the round a gentle cooling breeze from the west was a welcome relief.  Jenny Hartley had the best round of the day scoring very well with a 93 off the stick.  Results for the day

October Medallist and 2018/19 MoM; Jenny Hartley – 93/23/70, Elaine Scanlon – 106/28/78, Kath Jekabsons – 110/29/81

Tuesday October 29th – Par 3 Challenge – Lancefield G. C.

RGC was represented by Jenny Hartley, Darlene Baker and Roger Baker at the 2019 Par 3 Challenge.  It was a great, fun day of golf with all players enjoying the mild weather and shortened par 3 course.  An array of generous sponsors donated $100 for each “Nearest the Pin” for the day.  Jenny and Darlene, striking the ball cleanly, both took out a NTP.
Women’s Winner; Carol Mee – 33 Stableford points.

Men’s winner; Kevin McBride – 41 Stableford points.

Monday October 28th – DDGA Women’s Championships

The DDGA Women’s Championships were held at the Lancefield Golf Club. Played over 27 holes this event was held concurrently with The Champion of Champions, along with an 18 hole tournament, so it was quite a busy day. Captain Glenda Woods and Trish Grinter (along with other DDGA and Lancefield helpers) did a great job organising and running the day seamlessly.
Romsey was well represented by Beryl Cole, Elaine Scanlon, Wendy Gosden, Jenny Hartley and current Club Champion Darlene Baker.
In a very closely contested event Gail Leigh (10) from Marysville was the winner of the Champion of Champions with a scratch score of 87 ( with three other champions on 88.)
Sue Byrne (14) Trentham was the overall Women’s Champion with a 27 hole total of 129.
Sharon Cresswell (20) from Seymour won the Mary Dockery Trophy with the best net score of the day with 133/30/103 for the 27 holes.

Saturday October 26th – Oct Medal – Stroke & Putts

The club was very saddened by the passing of Peter Mitchell, a two times club captain and six times club champion.  Peter was a wonderful golfer, a farmer of renown and an acclaimed author.  A shoulder injury brought an early end to his golf but Peter soon became an excellent bowler.   RGC life member, John Laing, addressed the room after the round noting some of the many highlights of Peter’s life in and around Romsey.   Peter’s cheerful and positive presence will be much missed.
The day’s golf.  The  weather looked ominous from the beginning of the round, rain threatened and the wind, 35 – 40Kph shifted violently between the NW and the SW making some holes play very long and pushing well played shots well off line on other holes.  The rain fell in sweeps; it seemed to be semi-regular with spells of about 15 minutes between each downpour.  Golfers were well tested as wet weather gear came out and umbrellas blew away.  Forget even getting close to a Pair 3!  The spring growth also made things difficult, despite many hours spent mowing even a few meters off the fairway could mean a ball well hidden in the dense rough.  In the end one high class player was able to negotiate his way around the course with some imaginative driving and wonderful recovery shots and another “journey man golfer” was able to keep the ball straight to record the best scores of the day;
On a challenging and very sad  day the results were;
Winner; Michael Squire  – 82/5/77 from John  Freestone – 99/20/79
NTPs; With that wind – no way!
Least Putts;  Michael Squire –  28
Multiple RGC Champions; Ken Newnham & Peter Mitchell.

Thursday October 24th – Marysville Open – Marysville G. C.

The Marysville Tournament was held on a warm day with the temperature close to 30C, a gentle breeze gave some relief but plenty of water was needed to keep hydrated.  The course was in very good condition, well maintained fairways and quite fast and true greens. The numerous creek crossings were daunting as the water was flowing fiercely.

Overall Winner; Marysville local, Gail Leigh (11) – 87.
RGC players also performed well;.

A Grade; Darlene Baker 95/20/75 winning the Net

B Grade; Jenny Hartley was in a four player count-back for best net score but unfortunately was pipped at the post.

C Grade; Wendy Gosden kept the Romsey colours flying by claiming the runner up trophy and also getting nearest the pin on the 18th.

Wednesday October 23rd – Rd 2 – 2019 Singles K/O – Stroke

With lovely Spring weather reaching 27 degrees and a gentle breeze wafting across the course,  conditions were pleasant for the last of the qualifying rounds of the Singles Knockout.
Only two players have managed to play all qualifying rounds so Jenny Hartley and Wendy Gosden will fight it out in a Matchplay round to decide the winner.
Results for the day
1st.         Wendy Gosden.    105/27/78
2nd.        Darlene Baker.       98/19/79

Tuesday October 22nd -Trentham Tournament – Trentham G. C.

The Trentham Tournament was played in perfect weather on a course in tip top condition. Jess Pickwick (Kilmore), playing off a handicap of +1, took full advantage; shooting a great round and achieving a course record 72.
Three Romsey players, Jenny Hartley, Wendy Gosden and Darlene Baker were part of the field with Darlene earning 3 Player of the Year points for her net 75. Darlene also won “Nearest the Pin” on the 13th which was sponsored by Wombat Hill House Cafe.  All players enjoyed the very well presented course and enjoyed a lovely lunch after their round.

C Grade Scratch; Jenny Clarke – 107

NTPs; 2nd – Deb Richardson, 5th – Pam Jarvis,  13th – Darlene Baker & 15th – Jess Pickwick

Saturday October 19th – 4Ball Aggregate Stableford

With grass growing at a prodigious rate members had been very busy trying to control the rough as well as keep the fairways respectable, by late Friday all seemed to be OK. The greens, still recovering from their recent coring, were still a little furry,  and while they generally putted very true strokes had to be firm.  The round began in overcast conditions but the sun soon shone through.  There was intermittent rain, especially over the final few holes but the strong westerly wind proved to the the biggest problem,. The “4ball Aggregate” format allows teams to add their Stableford points so teams were looking at around 72 points however, the conditions were such that a score in the high 60s was an excellent effort.  On another challenging day on the course the results were;

Winners; Mick Squire (5)/Mal Mottram (10) – 69 pts from John Freestone (20)/Ron Walker (26) – 64 pts

Individuals; Chris Lingard (0) – 37 pts, Anthony Lakey (20) – 36 pts

NTPs; 1st – Les Gaunt, 15th – Les Gaunt & 16th – Ron Walker, Mal Mottram (10) – 35 pts

Wednesday October 16th – Rd 1 2019 Singles Knock-out

A small field hit off in light rain in the 2019 Singles Knockout.  The course was heavy and the rough rather thick in places, in other areas the mowers had been able to catch up with the spring growth.  The greens are continuing to improve after coring and, if still a little “furry” are  running true.  The day’s results were;

Winner; Jenny Hartley  – 105/23/82 from Wendy Gosden – 111/27/84.

Least Putts; Wendy Gosden – 28

Monday October 14th – Jean Whalder Bowl – Alexandra G. C.

Wendy Gosden, Jenny Hartley and Beryl Cole represented RGC at  Alexandra for the Jean Whalder Bowl. This bowl, unlike all  other bowls in the Dalhousie District, is a stroke event .  The course was in good condition and the weather was kind to us although the rain did threaten to fall at one stage

The bowl was won by an Alexandra team with 227.

Wendy won the C grade trophy with a net 70.
