Wednesday April 12th – Stroke & Putts – 2nd Rd Silver Spoon & Mona McLeod

The round was played under almost perfect weather conditions, lovely sunshine and very little wind. The heavy rain over the weekend had softened the fairways meaning much longer approach shots than over the past few weeks but the greens were in excellent nick and putted very true. Numbers were down a little due to school holidays and the Easter weekend approaching. On a perfect morning for golf the results were;
Winner; Darlene Baker; 95/24/71
Nine-hole Winner; Jenny Hartley – 60/19.5/40.5
Least Putts; Beryl Cole – 29

Sunday April 9th – Pennant Rd 2 – Woodend G. C.

A very different day fir the 2nd round of pennant. Woodend was in top nick but the skies opened up and there was steady rain only broken by heavy downpours, for most of the afternoon. Romsey was far more at home in these conditions and fought out a tight win over Hidden Valley;

Andrew Laing W – 4/3, Anthony Freeman l – 8/6, Michael McCarten W – 5/3, Rob Rea W- 5/4, Scott Williams W- 2 up, Sherif Abdel-Sayed L – 2/1 & John Freestone AS

Woodend D Mt Macedon – 4/3
Kilmore D Lancefield – 6.5/.5
Romsey D Hidden Valley – 4.5/2.5

Saturday April 8th – Final 47th Algie Mitchell Shield & Par

The run of wonderful autumn weather continued for the final of the 47th Algie Mitchell Shield and the club’s par competition. The fairways had excellent cover, especially in the irrigated areas, and there was more than a green tinge across the remainder of Romsey Park. The round began with clear skies and a gusting northerly wind, the wind moved to the west before settling from the north-west. Many a player hit during a lull only to find a gust moving their ball well off line, others found a gust to push their ball back to the fairway or green. The Algie Mitchell final proved to be a match of many surprises. John Freestone (9) played some remarkable golf and turned the corner just two over par. From there it was an uphill battle for John Moody (0). Given the inconsistent wind the week’s club competition, par, was surprisingly even with a a number of golfers just over their handicap. On a sunny, gusty day the results were;
Winner; Peter Scanlon (30) +1 from Les Gaunt (6) Square
NTPs; 1st Hugh Drummond & 15th – Mick Nichols Snr

Club captain, Anthony Lakey with 2017 Algie Mitchell Shield Winner John Freestone.

Thursday April 6th – 25th Romsey Challenge Bowl.

Sunday April 2nd – Pennant Rd 1 – Lancefield G. C.

It was a beautiful day for the 1st round of the 2017 pennant competition. Lancefield was in great condition however their very slick greens caught many of the visitors out. Our boys tried hard but we could not manage a win;

Saturday April 1st – DDGA Mixed Pairs – 4BBB Stableford

30 players assembled for the inaugural Dalhousie District Mixed Pairs Stableford competition. Teams came from Romsey, Lancefield, Trentham, Broadford, Seymour, Woodend and Marysville golf clubs. Conditions were cool and overcast with a blustery northerly wind however now and again the sun shone through and the wind dropped making for a far more pleasant golfing environment. The players found the fairways in good condition but, as a result of the Little Corella damage, the greens were quite varied but most of the field had seen similar damage to their courses over the last few months. By 3.00 the field was heading to the rooms for a well earned late lunch and a few quiet drinks. On a challenging yet enjoyable day the results were;

Winners; Sharon Cresswell (23)/Sandy Cresswell (17) – Seymour – 45 pts from Peter Scanlon (30)/Jenny Hartley (38) – Romsey – 44 pts
Women NTPs; 3rd – J. Vennell (Lancefield) 15th – M. Howard (Marysville)
Men NTPs; 1st – S. Cresswell 15th – M. Fountain (Seymour)

4BBB Runners Up Peter Scanlon & Jenny Hartley – 44 pts

4BBB Winners Sharon & Sandy Cresswell – 45 Pts

Saturday March 25th – Monthly Medal – Stroke & Putts

The round began under still, hot conditions. Later on a steady breeze blew up from the north before moving to the NW. After the 25mm of rain earlier in the week there was a green tinge across the whole park however, the fairways were generally still hard giving generous distance to all shots. The areas around, and 100m out from, the green was quite green so players had to be accurate with their approach shots as anything short rarely bounced onto the green. Anything long found the usual Romsey penance, a very challenging chip back to the cup. As with the last few weeks many players put in an excellent front or back nine but only a few could maintain their standard for the 18 holes. As the round drew to a close it was a battle between two of the club’s much loved veterans. On a sticky day the results were;

Winner and March Medalist; Les Gaunt – 75/6/69 from Bruce Robb – 102/30/70, Andrew Laing – 91/19/72, Anthony Freeman – 93/20/73 & Andrew Clement – 84/11/73
NTPs – 1st Kev Dunn & 16th – Scott Williams
Least Putts; Bruce Robb – 23

Wednesday March 22nd – Matchplay

The day began with light, misty rain, this steadily increased and despite a number of golfers assembling only two actually took to the course. The ~25mm of rain over the preceding days has softened the course and made the greens very receptive to well played wedges and high irons. The adventurous two “pulled the pin” after five holes and headed back to the rooms for a warm drink. The morning’s results were;

Jenny Hartley (39) D Kath Jekabsons (25) – 5 up

Saturday March 18th – Semi Finals Algie Mitchell & Stableford

A still, hot day on a rapidly hardening course. All players found extra run on the fairways however, the greens held very well if shots landed on the full. Those who “chipped and ran” often found themselves through the green and facing a difficult shot back. Despite the heat of the day and many a variable bounce on the fairways a number of golfers turned in excellent scores. There were a few “clubhouse leaders’ until the very last group came in. The day’s winner, after well over a month away from the game, showed how important patience and good decision making are on the golf course. The day also saw the semi-finals of the 47th Algie Mitchell Shield. On a hot, dry day the results were;

Winner; Jim Patton (22) – 41 pts from Chris vanDerVliet (25) – 40 pts, Les Gaunt (6) – 39 pts and Kev Dunn (23) 38 pts.
NTPs; 1st – Jim Patton, 15th – John Moody & 16th – Rob Rea

Algie Mitchell Semi-finals

John Freestone (2) D Anthony Freeman (0) 2/1
John Moody (2) D Mal Mottram (0) W/O

The April 8th Final of the 47th Algie Mitchell Shield will be;
John Freestone (9) Vs John Moody (0)

Wednesday March 16th – Stroke & Putts

The morning was already warm as the players took to the field. As the round progressed a hot, north-westerly wind blew up making difficult conditions all the more challenging. The greens again putted quite true so aiming at the hole really paid off. Despite the day’s trials a couple of “old stagers” took everything in their stride to card excellent scores. the day’s results were;

Women’s Winner; Kath Jekabsons – 94/26/68 (Five under, that will effect the handicap!)
Men’s Winner; Bruce Robb – 102/32/70
Women’s 9-hole Comp; Jenny Hartley – 52/20/32
Least Putts; Kath Jekabsons – 28
Least Putts 9-Hole Comp; Jenny Hartley – 14
