Saturday August 13th – Stableford – W. E. Tom Qualifying Rd

A strong field teed off in the club’s oldest shield; the W. E. Tom 4BBB, first contested in 1965.  Apart from the odd wet spot here and there the course, while soft, was in generally excellent condition.  The Corellas have returned about four months early (what is going on?) and caused some damage on a few of the greens keeping club captain, Mal Mottram, busy late into the Friday evening.  With only light winds the longer hitters had the advantage but accurate approach shots were the most important.  All greens had good pace and  were running very true.  The top eight pairs go through to the quarter finals next Saturday where they will be playing handicap matchplay.  On a beautiful day for golf the results were;

1st; Jim Patton(19)/Josh Squire (32) – 46pts

2nd; Shannon (10) & Daniel Wright (3) – 42 pts

3rd; John Freestone (26)/Bob McLennan(14) – 40 pts C/B from Mal Mottram (6)/Davey Kenney (12)

NTPs; 15th – Davey Kenney, 16th – Mal Mottram

Special mention to past captain, Tony Freeman, who took out the August Rich River Monthly Medal with a nett score of 67.

The Quarter Finals of the 2022 W. E. Tom Shield will be;

1. Shannon (7) & Daniel Wright (0) V 8. Walkover

3. Mal Mottram (1)/Davey Kenney (7) V 6. Andrew Clement (3)/Mick Squire (0)

2. John Freestone (11) /Bob McLennan (0) V 7. Keith Hocking (15)/Mick Nicholls Snr (12)

Wednesday August 9th – Stroke

The decision was made to play a 9 Hole comp on an extremely cold and wintry day. Players soldiered on finding it difficult to warm up as the temperature hovered around 4 degrees.
With very little run on the fairways accuracy from the tee was important with wayward shots proving costly. Competition was close as shown in the results.
Results for 9 Hole Comp
1st.        Darlene Baker   – 50/8/42
2nd.      Jenny Hartley    – 53/10/43
3rd.       Wendy Gosden   – 58/14/44

Saturday August 6th – 4B Multiplier Stableford

The field assembled under overcast skies which cleared early in the round.  Again, rain and heavy fews during the week had kept the course soft so no run on the fairways and balls stopped dead if they landed short of the greens.  The day remained sunny and fairly still until the final few holes when rain fell catching the final groups. as they headed towards the rooms.  On a cool, slightly wet afternoon the results were;

1st; Mick Squire (5)/Mitch Atlas (7) – 67 pts

2nd; Steve Wilkins (18)/John Freestone (26) – 63 pts

NTPs; 1st – Steve Wilkins, 15th – Luke Lyons, 16th – Toby Clement

Wednesday August 3rd – Stableford

The dark and threatening clouds that appeared over the mount at tee off time dispersed with the strong winds and players enjoyed a dry, wintry day on the course.  Overnight rain yet again reduced the run on the fairways but the greens were in great condition. Scoring was still difficult but somewhat better than previous Wednesdays. Results;
1st; Kath Jekabsons  – (39) 33points
2nd; Darlene Baker – (17) 32 pts
3rd; Jenny Hartley – (21) 27 pts   C/B, Rob Slade –  (15) 27 pts
NTP; 3rd – Darlene Baker

Saturday July 30th – July Medal, stroke & putts

A strong field took to the course for three July Medal  however, rain earlier in the week had again softened the course and another strong northerly wind sitting between 35 and 45KPH made for a challenging afternoon.   As in recent weeks, a number of players had a run of good holes before the softer conditions or the wind bit into their scoring.  To put together 18 consistent holes was just too much for the majority of the field.  Many regularly found the trees, others had clubs bite into the softer surface or saw the wind move their ball well off line.  Just one player came close to his handicap and one was able to slightly better it.  On a cold, windy afternoon the results were;

1st & July Medalist; Andrew Clement; 79/8/71

2nd; Mick Nicholls Jnr; 86/12/74

3rd; Pat Chisholm – 87/11/76 C/B Mick Squire, Davey Kenney & Mal Mottram

NTPs; 15th Andrew Clement, 16th – Mick Squire

Least Putts; Andrew Clement – 27

RGC Capt Mal Mottram with July Medalist Andrew Clement.

Wednesday July 27th – July Medal, stroke & putts (Running Comp with 30/7)

A round of Stroke play in wintry conditions was a tough slog. The recent rains had softened up the course considerably and shots needed to be high and long for any reward. The wet conditions tested all golfers which is reflected in the following scores. Daily Comp  results
1st (Bly Medalist); Jenny Hartley – 103/20/83 C/B
2nd; Kath Jekabsons – 121/38/83
3rd; Darlene Baker – 101/17/84

Least putts; Kath Jekabsons – 33.

9 Hole Comp winner; Lea Castle (newcomer)

Saturday July 23rd – Stroke

As with the majority of the last few weeks, it was again challenging for the field as they teed off in the club’s Stroke competition.  Very cold air, soft fairways, fast greens and a NE wind gusting to over 30Kph made it a tough day to post a good score.  The conditions made for inconsistent golf but once players became used to the greens scoring improved.  While a  number of player had far better back nines the damage had been done.  Club captain, Mal Mottram made space for two special awards to Steve Wilkins and Anthony Lakey for their courageous yet futile attempts to hit balls out of the dam; both balls stayed in the dam!  On a cool, windy afternoon, with only one player coming close to his handicap, the results were;

1st; Andrew Clement – 81/8/73

2nd; Mick Squire – 81/5/76 C/B

3rd;  Davey Kenney – 88/12/76 C/B Andrew Laing.

NTPs1st;  Steve Wilkins, 15th; Mitch Atlas, 16th; Andrew Clement

Wednesday July 20th – Foursomes

After a frosty start golfers completed their round in near perfect winter conditions. The greens were receptive to the ball landing from on high and putting was tricky in the frost but came good when the sun hit the greens. The Foursomes format is always tricky with consistency being the key to a good score Results were;

Winning team;Wendy Gosden/Rob Slade 101/22/79

Saturday July 16th – Stableford

The field was met with very cold conditions and a strong northerly wind gusting to over 60Kph. The relentless wind saw many balls pushed into the rough, some were even blown off line on the greens.  Anywhere near handicap was an excellent performance.  On a tough day “at the office “the results were;

1st; Pat Chisholm (11) – 34pts

2nd; Mitch Atlas (7) – 32pts

3rd; Mick Squire (5) – 30pts

NTPs; 1st – Bob McLennan, 15th – Andrew Clement
