Thursday February 28th – Alexandra Bowl – Alexandra G. C.

The Alexandra Tournament was held in very warm and humid conditions. The club thankfully provided cooled watermelon and bottled water out on the course which was appreciated by many. The course, like many others in the district at the moment, was hard and dry, with plenty of run. With a horse race meeting planned in the coming weeks the race track was quite lush which pulled up many long hits. A compulsory free drop was provided.
The overall winner on the day was Liz Amos, from Marysville, with an outstanding scratch score of 83, which included an eagle on the par 4. 3rd hole.
Romsey was well represented by Beryl Cole, Darlene Baker and Wendy Gosden. Wendy had a very good round of 99/32/67 which earned her the runners up award for C Grade AND 4 points for Dalhousie Player of The Year Award. Well done Wendy.  Wendy was also part of the winning “Small Teams Event” she teamed with Shirley Wright (Seymour) and Vicky Buttler (Yea)

Wednesday February 27th – Stroke – 2019 Flatstick Roofing Summer Cup Rd 4B

Although a hot, dusty course met the field, the final round of the 2019 “Flatstick Roofing Summer Cup” was played in generally brilliant summer conditions.  Two of the field were running 1 and 2 in The Cup so a good performance in this final round could guarantee one of them the overall win.  Scoring was enhanced by the extra run on the fairways while some tricky pin placements provided an added challenge.  Competition was fierce with only one shot separating the top three players in the women’s comp with the day’s results –
Women; Darlene Baker – 91/19/72 from Jenny Hartley – 93/20/73 & Wendy Gosden – 104/31/73
Men; Chris Manktelow – 113/34/79
NTP; 1st – Chris Manktelow & 15th – Jenny Hartley

Monday February 24th – Gisborne Bowl – Gisborne G. C.

Some fantastic golf was played in near perfect weather conditions at the Gisborne Bowl. A field of 84 women took part on a well prepared course with greens that ran true but not particularly quickly, bold strong putts were generally well rewarded.  Those who stayed on the fairways found lovely plush grass to hit from and the added run on the course created challenging second and third shots.  Romsey was represented by Lorraine Robb, Jenny Hartley and Darlene Baker.
A team of women from Lakeside G. C. were the winners on the day with a commendable score of 106 pts.

Saturday February 23rd – Monthly Medal – Rd 4 2019 Flatstick Roofing Summer Cup

The February Medal attracted a good field, men and women, and with the greens in top nick and PLENTY of run on the fairways some good scoring was expected.  The round began with a steady southerly breeze but players quickly adapted and it was not until the final few holes that the wind blew up and caused some severe problems, especially on the 18th.  During the round the odd ball bounced wildly and veered off into the rough but most shots stayed true to their line.  There was some new corella damage on two greens but relay not the huge, deep holes of recent years.   However, despite the generally good conditions players found it difficult to play consistent golf and no-one was able to return a score under their handicap.  On a warm, windy afternoon the results were;

February Medalist Men; Keith Hocking – 103/30/73 from Hugh Drummond – 94/20/74 & Mick Nicholls Jnr – 90/15/75

February Medalist Women; Liz Manktelow – 99/21/78

Least Putts; Pat Chisholm – 29 C/B from Les Gaunt, Pam Drummond – 31

NTPs; 1st Bob Dwyer, 15th – Mal Mottram & 16th – Mick Nicholls Jnr

Wednesday February 20th – Stableford – Rd 3 2019 Flatstick Roofing Summer Cup

Part two of the third round of the Summer Cup was held in near perfect conditions. A large field of both men and women contested the Stableford Round with a great winning score of 39 points by Jenny Hartley. Jenny is playing very consistent golf at present and reaping the rewards. Results for the day –
Women; Jenny Hartley – 39 points from Elaine Scanlon – 31 & Beryl Cole – 29
9 Hole Competition; Jan Harver – 13 from  Pam Drummond – 10

NTPs; 15th – Darlene Baker, 16th – Hugh Williams

Tuesday February 19th – DDGA 4BBB – Yea G. C.

The first day back on the Dalhousie circuit for 2019 was the 4BBB at Yea. The day also saw the Player of the Year for 2018 awarded to Adrienne Anglin.  Romsey was represented by two teams, Beryl Cole/Lorraine Robb along with Wendy Gosden/Darlene Baker.
There was a lot of run on the course but players were not always able to take advantage of the extra distance with many a ball running through the green on approach. A number of teams headed to the clubhouse with scores in the mid 40s but the eventual winners were RACV Healesville with a very commendable score of 50.
The field of 48 players enjoyed getting back into the swing of things with many familiar faces from around the district happily reconnecting after the summer break and all were keen to catch up again in the near future.

Saturday February 16th – Stableford – Rd 3 2019 Flatstick Roofing Summer Cup (G4aC)

Some problems with the irrigation system saw no water on the course for two days, again we were fortunate in that the weather was reasonably mild so not too much damage done.  Great work from Les Gaunt & Ron Walker soon had everything back on track.  The 3rd round of the Summer Cup got underway on a hot, still afternoon.  Hard fairways saw many drives far closer to the green that usual and all those who could pitch accurately were in for good day.  The greens had survived the enforced dry very well and watering over night saw them holding very well.  As the round progressed a southerly breeze blew up and then wobbled to and from the south-east.  Every now and then a gust would see balls move well off line.  Posting a good score meant playing consistent golf, there was no room for a “wipe” .  The final results saw a wiley old veteran, one of the club’s young guns and “The Pres” fight it out over the final few holes.  The day also saw $113 raised for Cancer Research as part of the Drummond Golf “Golf 4 a Cause” program.  On a dry course on a breezy afternoon the results were;

Winner; Anthony Lakey (22) – 43 pts from Mick Nicholls Jnr (16) – 41 pts, Bruce Robb (32) – 40 pts & Mick Squire (7) – 36 pts

Women’s Winner; Liz  Manktelow (21) – 30 pts

NTPs; 15th – Mick Nicholls Jnr

All of Romsey Golf Club would like to congratulate RGC member and multiple club champion, Dean Jones, on his recent elevation to Cricket Australia’s “Hall of Fame”.  Well done Deano!

Wednesday February 13th – Stroke – 2nd Rd Flatstick Roofing Summer Cup

A strong southerly wind persisted for most the round which was the second of the Summer Cup and First Round of the Silver Spoon.  A strong field contested the event and enjoyed the cooler conditions.  Drives that were kept low were rewarded with plenty of run and approach shots were generally holding well.   Results were;

Winner;  Jenny Hartley           95/23/72, Jan Harver               118/45/73 &  Lorraine Robb         109/34/75

Sunday February 10th – 4 player Ambrose – Relay For Life Charity Golf Day

Sixteen teams teed up at Romsey Golf Course to help raise money for Puddles’ Team and the 2019 Lancefield/Macedon Ranges Relay For Life.  More than a few teams dressed up hoping to win the “Best Team Uniform” award while others were just out for an enjoyable morning’s golf and a great meal back in the clubrooms.  There was some serious competition between a few teams, especially JB’s Bandits who had come a very close 2nd in 2018.  The wind began from the NW then moved to the SW and proceeded to swing back and forth for the whole morning.  Just about everyone could hear the theme from “Gilligan’s Island” courtesy of the team “3Hr Tour” while every now and then wild shouts of elation erupted as a birdie or eagle putt dropped.  All teams were back in the rooms just before 1.00 pm and enjoying the wonderful lunch prepared by the members of  “Puddles’ Team”.

An auction of tools was held just before presentations then the major sponsors, “Romsey Hardware” were thanked along with Blackwoods, The Romsey Bottle-O, Pantry on Main, Burnbrook Fields and BSC Industrial who had all supported the event.  The day saw ~$2,300.00 raised for Cancer Research.

Saturday February 9th – Stroke – Rd 2 Flatstick Roofing Summer Cup

Steady rain was falling as players assembled for the 2nd round of the 2019  Flatstick Roofing Summer Cup however, by the time everyone headed to the tee the rain had cleared and there was a gusting NW wind.  This wind gained in strength and moved between the NW and the SW for the remainder of the afternoon.  Many players found their approach shots “blowing up” and landing well short of the green, others saw their shots veer windy as soon as they got into the wind above the trees.  The recent rains and irrigation made the dryer fairways more forgiving and players who chose to keep the ball low, very low in some cases, often finished up with a very positive result.  In the end it was battle between a “young gun” and a “wise old head” to take out the day.  On a very windy afternoon the results were;

Winner; Shannon Wright – 81/11/70 from Bruce Robb – 104/33/71 & Wayne Robb – 86/13/73

NTPs; 1st – Les Gaunt, 15th – Anthony Lakey & 16th – Hugh Drummond
