Monday April 15th – DDGA Women’s Pennant Golf Rd 1

Monday 15th April saw the beginning of the women’s pennant season. Romsey were drawn to play Lancefield at Trentham in the Division 3 Handicap. The weather was perfect not a breeze to be felt and warm and sunny. The players were all inspired after watching Tiger Woods win at Augusta. Unfortunately after most players having to give strokes we went down 3/2. We all agreed the course was in good condition and some of the greens beat us. The other match at Trentham, Avenel went down to Trentham 3 ½ /1 ½ .

Saturday April 13th – Par

It was a still, sunny afternoon for the club’s Par round.  A strong field teed up hoping to take advantage of the good conditions but, as usual with golf, expectations rarely meet reality.  There was some additional difficulty added to the round as, during the past week, a number of damaged and dangerous trees had been felled leaving piles of wood and some heavily churned areas of soil.  The ongoing dry, virtually no rain since early January, saw widening cracks on some fairways and, outside the irrigated areas, many bare patches so relief on fairway played was still given.  Despite the more than challenging conditions a few golfers were able to rise above the pack and return a f\good score.  The day’s results were;

Winner; Mick Squire (6) – +5 from Pat Chisholm (14) – +3 & Andrew Laing (21) – +2

NTPs; 15th Hugh Drummond.

Wednesday April 10th – Doris Chambers Qualifying – Foursomes

The Doris Chambers qualifying round was played in chilly autumn weather that promised sunshine but failed to deliver. The wind was brisk and gusty affecting club choice on many holes.  Foursomes is a challenging format with the alternate shot requiring concentration and consistency from both players.
Winners; Jenny Hartley (19)/Wendy Gosden (28) – 30 points from Lorraine Robb (33)’Kath Jekabsons (29)
Jenny and Wendy will represent the club later in the year for the finals of The Doris Chambers Foursomes.

Sunday April 7th – DDGA Men’s Pennant Golf

Round 2 – Scratch Division 2

The team travelled to Kilmore to take on Strathbogie.  A beautiful, still autumn day and while the greens and surrounds were in good in nick the ongoing lack of rain had seen the fairways and rough dry out considerably.   The RGC team came very close to notching their first win in the season with two matches going down to the final hole, in the end we went down 5/2.  RGC results were ; Les Gaunt – L1Dn, Andrew Clement – L1Dn, Andrew Evans – Sq, Bob McLennan – W4/3, Pat Chisholm – L2Dn, Mick Nicholls Jnr – L6/5 & Scott Williams – Sq.  Over-all results were;

Strathbogie D Romsey – 5/2

Broadford D Seymour – 4/3

Round 3 – Handicap Division 3

The team travelled to Euroa to take on Kilmore.  Again a beautiful, sunny autumn day.  The front nine greens have been scarified so putting was more than usually tricky.  The back nine greens were untouched causing many players to either over or under hit leaving longer than usual second putts.  It was great to so IPC Tony Freeman (on his way to Echuca from Albury?) drop in to see the team hit off.  The RGC team also came very close to picking up their third win of the season.  RGC results were; Anthony Lakey – L4/3, Heath Rae – W1Up, Rob Rea – Sq, Mick Nicholls Snr – L1Dn, Chris vanDerVliet – L2/1, Ron Walker – W6/5 & Keith Hocking – Sq.
