Thursday June 15th – Avenel Salver

Romsey Golf Club was represented in the annual team’s event, the Avenel Salver, by Beryl Cole, Lorraine Robb and Darlene Baker.  The weather was perfect from start to finish with dappled to full sunlight and a gentle breeze.  There were preferred lies “Through The Green” largely due to bird damage but generally the course was in good condition.

All three RGC players adapted well to the the sand scrapes and generally enjoyed good golf.  Seymour won the day with a team total of 100 pts, Romsey came in 3rd with a  respectable 96 pts.  A highlight of the day was Lorraine winning C Grade with 34 pts.

Wednesday June 14th – 4th Rd Silver Spoon – Stroke & Putts

The field headed to the 1st tee in lovely sunshine with a strong breeze from the east, the breeze kept up for the round and made the back nine more than challenging.  It was good to welcome back Sharon Mathers who had recently competed in the GolfVic Par 3 competition in Kyabram, won, for the 4th time, by Kilmore’s Jessica Pickwick.  On another wonderful early winter’s morning the results were;

Winner; Darlene Baker – 97/22/75 C/B from Elaine Scanlon – 107/32/75 and Jenny Hartley – 109/34/75

Men’s Winner;Michael McCarten – 96/12/84

Monday June 12th – Queen’s Birthday Stableford

A nine o”clock start had a number of players rugged up and some early light rain even had a few umbrellas out.  The rain soon cleared, the chill left the atmosphere and the final six holes were played in much warmer, sunnier conditions.  The day’s results were;

Men’s Winner; Michael McCarten (13) – 38 pts

Women’s Winner; Elaine Scanlon (33) – 37 pts

NTPs; 15th – Darlene Baker & 16th – Andrew Laing

Saturday June 10th – 4BBB Stroke

The round began on a clear, sunny afternoon.  The fairways had good cover but were still soft, shaded areas  carried heavy dew so there was little run and plenty of mud once the ball landed; relief to a handspan across the course, was given.  The field was boosted by a number of members of the Romsey Football/Netball club who were taking advantage of a Saturday without football or netball for a round of golf.  As the round progressed the weather improved and made for an excellent afternoon in the park.  The 4BBB Stroke format saw a number of pairs playing outstanding front nines and posting good scores but it consistency over the the final nine decided the day’s winner.  In the end it came down to just who could best handle the most difficult hole on the course, the 18th.  On a wonderful, early winter’s day the results were;

Winners; Mal Mottram/Anthony Lakey – 80/16/64, Dean Borg/Ethan Bray – 85/21/64, Sherif Abdel-Sayed – 85/19.5/65.5 & Darlene Baker/Bob McLennan – 84/17.5/66.5

NTPs; 15th – Mick Nicholls Jnr

Thursday June 8th – Bacchus marsh West Bowl

Despite Bacchus Marsh West Golf Club (BMWGC) being outside Dalhousie District Romsey and BMWGC have long enjoyed a very positive relationship.  The BMWGC annual Bowl was played in still conditions with the field hitting off on a very frosty morning.  The RGC team of Wendy Gosden, Kath Jekabsons and Darlene Baker again rose to the occasion and performed well with 96 pts to be runners-up behind Gisborne with 98 pts.  Wendy had a great round taking out C Grade with 35 pts.

Wednesday June 7th – Stableford

The mid-week Stableford round hit-off on a crisp early winter’s morning.  There was plenty of dew on the fairways and greens which rapidly slowed the ball and made putting more challenging that usual.   It was not until the middle of the front nine that the sun came out.  A of the highlight of the day was a birdie on the long par 4 5th hole to Darlene Baker.  The morning’s results were;

Women’s Winner; Darlene Baker (22) – 34 pts from Wendy Gosden (37) – 32 pts.

Men’s Winner; Michael McCarten (14) – 35 pts

Women’s 9-hole Winner; Jenny Hartley (34) – 14 pts

Thursday June 1st – Kyneton G. C. 4BBB

Romsey was well represented at the annual Kyneton 4BBB tournament, it was the 1st day of winter and conditions were cool and wet.  There was a large field with teams from many Dalhousie and other local clubs.  Kyneton made every effort to keep the field well fed, watered and warm with special drinks and snacks on the 5th and 14th tees.  Out teams, Beryl Cole/Wendy Gosden, Lorraine Robb/Denise O’Meara and Darlene Baker/Elaine Scanlon all performed well with Elaine (33) and Darlene(22) taking out B Grade with 38 pt

Wednesday May 31st – Monthly Medal – Stroke & Putts

The day began under dark skies with a cold, south-westerly wind.  The more sheltered areas of Romsey Park were much warmer, especially after the sun broke through.  With fairways  lush and giving everyone good lies the course was in top nick so there were no excuses for poor scoring.  The morning’s results were;

Winner & May Medalist; Darlene Baker – 104/22/82 from Lorraine Robb.

Least Putts; Darlene Baker – 34

9-hole Winner; Jenny Hartley – 60/14/78,

Least Putts; Leila Beasley – 15

Men’s Comp winner; Michael McCarten – 92/14/78 from Bruce Robb

Saturday May 27th – May Medal – Stroke & Putts (2nd Round Silver Spoon)

The round began with a gusting wind blowing from the north, as the day progressed the wind moved to the east and then shifted back and forth, this caused much havoc for balls in the air and forced players to think carefully before pulling a club from the bag.  The course was again in top condition; the fairways were a little soft, they bounced true and had excellent cover ensuring balls sat up.  While the field was quite strong a number of members were absent representing RGC at the 2017 Lancefield Open (Shannon Wright/Mick Nichols Jnr winners with 50 pts) so many in the field felt they had a better than average chance of taking the May Medal.  The day saw three players putting in good rounds and looking in excellent positions to win the day but when it came down to it one bad hole was all that really separated them.  There was also a good field of women competing in the 2nd round of the 2017 Silver Spoon.  On a cool, windy day the results were;

Winner & May Medalist; Rob Rea – 85/19/66 from Michael McCarten – 82/15/67 & Anthony Lakey – 92/22/70

Silver Spoon Rd 2 Winner; Darlene Baker – 97/22/75

NTPs; 16th – Bob McLennan,

Least Putts; Rob Rea – 24 &  Lorraine Robb – 31
