Wednesday July 29th – Monthly Medal – Stroke & Putts

A heavy fog descended as the second group teed off but three holes later brilliant winter weather took over to become a perfectly still and sunny day.   The course had fewer patches of casual water but the going was still very heavy underfoot. The greens were fast with bold putts, straight at the hole, the best form of attack. It was a pleasure to be out on the course in this time of Covid-19 restrictions. The round’s results were;

Saturday July 25th – July Medal – Stroke & Putts

How about that, almost two weeks with only a few heavy dews and the odd spot of drizzle, the course had gone from “mostly sloppy” to “sloppy here and there”. The Medal round began under clear skies with virtually no wind and plant of mid winter sun.  Pretty soon the jumpers came off and the hats were put on.  While the 6th and 7th fairways were still very wet leading to deeply plugged balls players could easily found their ball on the remainder of the course.  The greens were still quite fast with less than the usual borrow, players had to be careful when putting down to the cup or risk rolling off the green.  We were pleased to again welcome local golfers whose clubs were in lock down.  On a magnificent mid winter’s day the results were;

Winner and July Medalist; Davie Kenny – 97/22/75 C/B from Steve Wilkins – 94/19/75 & Pat Chisholm – 86/11/75

Least Putts; Simon Donovan – 28

Ron – oversaw removal of numerous fallen branches while sorting out works to greatly assist the whole course/club.

Bob – turned up to check the mower cutting plates then spent the day cutting the fairways.

Wilco – spent much time moving bits and pieces here and there and there and then  having a good conversation with numerous green fees golfers and the many other local community members who use Romsey Park.

Hugh – busy with the greens and also working the phones to clarify a few things in relation to the MRSC monies.

Elaine – does a great job sorting out electronic payments each Saturday then heads down Otto he 10th to sell the odd refreshment.

Wednesday July 22nd – Various

A number of formats were offered including 4BBB, 18 Hole Stableford, 9 Hole Stableford and a choice of playing the Blue or Red Tees.  A good field took advantage of the choices and enjoyed a course that is slowly becoming less wet and boggy. Saturday July 18th – John Laing Shield Semi Final & 4B Multiplier Stableford

With no rain for almost a week, some wind and a few sunny days the course had dried considerably. Unfortunately both the sixth and seventh holes were still very heavy but overall the course was much improved. We were very pleased to  welcome a number of local golfers whose home clubs were in the lock down areas.  It was good to hear their comments on the layout and the challenges it provided.  The round saw short periods of sun but generally it was overcast with winds which moved from the Sth to the NW.  The 4B Multiplier Stableford format allows teams to benefit when both players have a good hole but should one member have a wipe then the team score is zero.  The day also saw the final semi-final of the John Laing Shield.  This was generally a tight affair with neither player getting away until the final few holes.  On a cool, overcast afternoon the results were;

Winner 4B Multiplier Stableford; Pat Chisholm (11)/Scott Williams (16) – 53 pts, Andrew Clement (9)/Toby Clement (24) – 48 pts & Michael Squire (3)/Joshua Squire (54) – 48 pts

Wednesday July 15th – Stableford

Another chilly, overcast start to the round cleared to become a fine and sunny winter’s day. Ten players took to the course in different formats and enjoyed the conditions. The course has been maintained by our dedicated staff throughout the covid pandemic and it is in fine condition.  The fairways are super and the greens near perfect. Apart from a few boggy patches and heavy conditions underfoot, it is a pleasure to play at Romsey Golf Club and a credit to our volunteers who work so hard.
A group of women played a composite course to avoid the casual water on some holes whilst another group of men, joined by Trent, a visitor from Woodend, played the normal 18 holes from the red tees.

Wednesday July 8th – Par 3

Another brilliant but chilly morning greeted the hardy group of golfers who took to the course. Tees were brought forward to create a par 3 course which was a challenging and enjoyable change.  Conditions were very heavy underfoot but playing the par 3 s reduced the length required off the tee and scores reflected this.  Results were;
1st; Lorraine Robb – Nett 55     C/B
2nd; Jenny Hartley – Nett 55
3rd; Darlene Baker – Nett 60

Saturday July 4th – Semi Final John Laing Shield & Stableford

Rain on Friday had made the greens too slippery to cut so long, wet fairways and furry greens, just what the doctor ordered for a pleasant round of golf. Despite the conditions the afternoon was sunny with only occasional bursts of wind form the NW.  Again, there was no run and groups had to watch carefully or risk spending a deal of time looking for plugged balls.  The soft fairways sucked the life out the legs of all players and, at the end of the day, everyone was relieved to be heading up the 18th.  On a cool, sunny afternoon the results were;

Winner; Ryan Davies (24) – 37pts from Mitchell Clement (10) – 36pts, Davie Kenney (22) – 34pts  & Mal Mottram (8) – 33pts

Wednesday July 1st – Stableford

Although still wet the course had noticeably less casual water compared to previous weeks. This made for more pleasant conditions on a beautiful, sunny, winter’s day. It was still heavy under foot with little to no run once the ball hit the fairways and consequently scoring well was difficult.

Saturday June 27th – Monthly Medal – Stroke & Putts

More rain during the week had made it impossible to cut anything bar the greens,  some of the wetter sections of the fairways had not been cut for three weeks.  Lost balls, plugged or amongst the long grass on the fairways, became a strong possibility.  The wet and spongy surfaces meant both push buggies and motorised carts had to be careful.  So, even though there was just a gentle breeze from the S/SW and the sun shone through, it was really another “tough day at the office”.  Despite the squelchy conditions the June Medal drew a strong field.  It was a day for steady , conservative golf, shots were not travelling as far in the air and nowhere once they landed, a few groups spent quite a while searching for balls that had landed and plugged deeply in the middle of the fairway.  Correct club selection was vital, usually one more than on a more normal day.  On a still, sunny day on a very wet course the results were;

Winner and June Medallist;  Ryan Davies – 99/26/73 from Simon Donovan- 88/13/75, Anthony Lakey – 95/20/75 Les Gaunt – 83/7/76 & Rob Rea – 95/19/76

Lesast Putts; Mick Squire – 28
