Tuesday March 5th – Irish Day – Kyneton G. C.

Lorraine Robb and Beryl Cole combined with Marion from Kyneton to form a team to play in the Irish Day. There was a very good field.  Lancefield women (who were unrecognisable in their red hair) won the best costume event. The course was in good condition with lots of summer run which the Axedale ladies commented on.  The day was enjoyed with some good scores occasionally. Axedale 2 was the winner from Axedale1 with 91points.

Monday March 3rd – Lancefield Tournament – Lancefield G. C.

The Lancefield Tournament was held in hot and humid conditions. The course was very well prepared and although the fairways were dry, there was quite a good cover of grass. Preferred lies on the fairway being played was applied but there appeared to be few places where it was needed. The greens were quite good and were nice and soft which rewarded high, straight approach shots. Romsey was represented by Jenny Hartley, Wendy Gosden and Darlene Baker.
Wendy had a great score of 99/29/70 but was pipped at the post by locals in the C Grade comp.
Congratulations to Darlene who won the A Grade Nett – 91/18/73 (on a count back from Chris Doherty) as well as NTP on the 5th with Wendy NTP on the 16th.  Wendy continued her great form and received 5 points in the Player of the Year Award and Darlene 1 point, and to round off a good day for RGC, Jenny won the raffle.

The 2019 Lancefield Tournament Champion; Deb Richardson  – 81/10/71

Saturday March 1st – Algie Mitchell Shield Qualifying Rd – Stroke – Top 8

After three days of high temperatures and Saturday’s prediction of 34C  the club’s “Extreme Heat” policy was activated and players teed off at 8.30am, the morning was cooled a little by a steady northerly wind which blew for almost the whole round.  The warmer, dry air saw all players gain good distance off the tee and many found themselves far closer to the green than usual. Correct club selection and accurate approach shots saw frequent birdies however, those who misjudged often found themselves well over the back with very difficult chips to save par.  The day favoured the golfer who could play within himself and keep the ball down the centre of the fairway, overhitting resulted in players ending up well off the fairway and forced to choose higher clubs to get up and over trees and back on to the fairway. Despite the good efforts of many golfers the day belonged to only one. The presentation of the 2019 Flatstick Roofing Summer Cup winners was also made.  On a warm and windy morning the results were;

Winner; John Laing – 94/29/65 from Les Gaunt – 81/8/73, Mick Nicholls Snr – 95/22/73 & John Freestone – 95/21/74

NTPs; 15th – Bruce Robb, 16th – Les Gaunt.

2019 Flatstick Roofing Summer Cup; 3rd Anthony Lakey (20 Pts), 1st Jenny Hartley (26 Pts) & 2nd Mick Nicholls Jnr (21 pts)

Quarter Finals of the Algie Mitchell Shield

John Laing (0) Vs Bruce Robb (2)

Mick Nicholls Snr (1) Vs John  Freestone (0)

Les Gaunt (0) Vs Anthony Lakey (13)

Thursday February 28th – Alexandra Bowl – Alexandra G. C.

The Alexandra Tournament was held in very warm and humid conditions. The club thankfully provided cooled watermelon and bottled water out on the course which was appreciated by many. The course, like many others in the district at the moment, was hard and dry, with plenty of run. With a horse race meeting planned in the coming weeks the race track was quite lush which pulled up many long hits. A compulsory free drop was provided.
The overall winner on the day was Liz Amos, from Marysville, with an outstanding scratch score of 83, which included an eagle on the par 4. 3rd hole.
Romsey was well represented by Beryl Cole, Darlene Baker and Wendy Gosden. Wendy had a very good round of 99/32/67 which earned her the runners up award for C Grade AND 4 points for Dalhousie Player of The Year Award. Well done Wendy.  Wendy was also part of the winning “Small Teams Event” she teamed with Shirley Wright (Seymour) and Vicky Buttler (Yea)

Wednesday February 27th – Stroke – 2019 Flatstick Roofing Summer Cup Rd 4B

Although a hot, dusty course met the field, the final round of the 2019 “Flatstick Roofing Summer Cup” was played in generally brilliant summer conditions.  Two of the field were running 1 and 2 in The Cup so a good performance in this final round could guarantee one of them the overall win.  Scoring was enhanced by the extra run on the fairways while some tricky pin placements provided an added challenge.  Competition was fierce with only one shot separating the top three players in the women’s comp with the day’s results –
Women; Darlene Baker – 91/19/72 from Jenny Hartley – 93/20/73 & Wendy Gosden – 104/31/73
Men; Chris Manktelow – 113/34/79
NTP; 1st – Chris Manktelow & 15th – Jenny Hartley

Monday February 24th – Gisborne Bowl – Gisborne G. C.

Some fantastic golf was played in near perfect weather conditions at the Gisborne Bowl. A field of 84 women took part on a well prepared course with greens that ran true but not particularly quickly, bold strong putts were generally well rewarded.  Those who stayed on the fairways found lovely plush grass to hit from and the added run on the course created challenging second and third shots.  Romsey was represented by Lorraine Robb, Jenny Hartley and Darlene Baker.
A team of women from Lakeside G. C. were the winners on the day with a commendable score of 106 pts.

Saturday February 23rd – Monthly Medal – Rd 4 2019 Flatstick Roofing Summer Cup

The February Medal attracted a good field, men and women, and with the greens in top nick and PLENTY of run on the fairways some good scoring was expected.  The round began with a steady southerly breeze but players quickly adapted and it was not until the final few holes that the wind blew up and caused some severe problems, especially on the 18th.  During the round the odd ball bounced wildly and veered off into the rough but most shots stayed true to their line.  There was some new corella damage on two greens but relay not the huge, deep holes of recent years.   However, despite the generally good conditions players found it difficult to play consistent golf and no-one was able to return a score under their handicap.  On a warm, windy afternoon the results were;

February Medalist Men; Keith Hocking – 103/30/73 from Hugh Drummond – 94/20/74 & Mick Nicholls Jnr – 90/15/75

February Medalist Women; Liz Manktelow – 99/21/78

Least Putts; Pat Chisholm – 29 C/B from Les Gaunt, Pam Drummond – 31

NTPs; 1st Bob Dwyer, 15th – Mal Mottram & 16th – Mick Nicholls Jnr

Wednesday February 20th – Stableford – Rd 3 2019 Flatstick Roofing Summer Cup

Part two of the third round of the Summer Cup was held in near perfect conditions. A large field of both men and women contested the Stableford Round with a great winning score of 39 points by Jenny Hartley. Jenny is playing very consistent golf at present and reaping the rewards. Results for the day –
Women; Jenny Hartley – 39 points from Elaine Scanlon – 31 & Beryl Cole – 29
9 Hole Competition; Jan Harver – 13 from  Pam Drummond – 10
Men;  Chris Manktelow – 34 points from Hugh Williams – 31 & Bruce Robb – 26
NTPs; 15th – Darlene Baker, 16th – Hugh Williams

Tuesday February 19th – DDGA 4BBB – Yea G. C.

The first day back on the Dalhousie circuit for 2019 was the 4BBB at Yea. The day also saw the Player of the Year for 2018 awarded to Adrienne Anglin.  Romsey was represented by two teams, Beryl Cole/Lorraine Robb along with Wendy Gosden/Darlene Baker.
There was a lot of run on the course but players were not always able to take advantage of the extra distance with many a ball running through the green on approach. A number of teams headed to the clubhouse with scores in the mid 40s but the eventual winners were RACV Healesville with a very commendable score of 50.
The field of 48 players enjoyed getting back into the swing of things with many familiar faces from around the district happily reconnecting after the summer break and all were keen to catch up again in the near future.
