Wednesday September 26th – Monthly Medal – Stroke

After three cold days it was good to see a sunny spring day.  The weather warmed up very quickly and the jumpers came off and the hats went on.  Despite the generally good conditions all players found it difficult to make the most of the almost perfect day, everyone had a few stray shots in their round.  It was great to see a goodly number participating in the “Play 9” competition.  The round also saw club stalwart, Kath Jekabsons, back for her first game after a few months off recuperating.  On a top morning for golf the Monthly medal results were;

Winner and September Medallist; Jenny Hartley 99/24/75 from Elaine Scanlon 109/30/79
“Play 9” results; Elaine Scanlon 53-15-38 and Jenny Hartley 50-12-38 will be Romsey Golf Club’s two women representatives at District play off at Seymour.

Saturday September 22nd – 2018 Macedon Ranges Spring Cup

The 2018 Spring Cup was held in wonderful conditions; clear skies, plenty of sun and virtually no wind.  A field of 53 took to the course, clubs represented were Romsey, Mt Macedon, Bacchus Marsh, Keysborough, Tocumwal, GSF, Woodend, Mandalay, Hidden Valley and Medway.  Despite the excellent conditions virtually everyone found it difficult to play consistent golf and card a good score. Visitor were challenged by the tight fairways and the smaller greens.  Some groups were in a very social frame of mind where good, and bad, shots were greeted by raucous cheers.  Others, playing more seriously, were frustrated by chips just rolling off the green and down over back or putts slipping well passed the cup.   As the field enjoyed a wonderful roast lunch RGC president Anthony Lakey thanked all those who had played, the RGC members whose hard work saw the course in top condition and who had organised the  refreshments and main meal and the event  sponsors, Drummond Golf, Niddrie.  There was much applause after special mention was made of life member John Laing,  After 30 years John was handing the organisation of Green Fees cards etc and the collection of monies over to RGC member Wendy Gosden.   MMGC captain, Richard Payne, congratulated everyone on a very successful event before Chris Milverton (Drummond Golf Niddrie) and Scott Williams made the day’s presentations.  On a great day for golf the results were;

Spring Cup winners; Romsey – 29.15 D Mt Macedon – 25.10

A Grade; Scott Williams – 38 Pts from Mick Nichols Jnr – 35 pts c/b from  Mark Burridge,

Wednesday September 19th – Par

A crisp spring morning with slight breeze greeted the Wednesday field for the club’s Par round.  Greens were true (beautiful), and there as some slight run on fairway.  Judging distance into each green proved a bit of challenge as conditions varied from hole to hole.  The softer fairways and faster greens saw all players struggle to post a good score.  The day’s results were;

Winner; Elaine Scanlon (30) -6 from   Lorraine Robb (31) C/B from Jenny Hartley (24) -7

Saturday September 15th – Monthly Medal – Stroke & Putts

The prediction of atrocious weather saw a number regulars staying at home and those daring golfers who did decide to play in the September Medal faced “four seasons in one day”; sun, rain, sleet, hail and freezing, gusting westerly and north-westerly winds.  While the course had prospered from the sun and wind during the week seeing all fairways dry out considerably and good growth across the whole park the day’s rain/hail/sleet again saw slippery conditions.  Twice during the round the hail and sleet had players sheltering under trees and the gusting wind made it virtually impossible to use an umbrella.  The winds also saw balls moving well off line whilst in the air and even on greens, making putting more than usually challenging.  Despite the tough conditions two players were able to perform well and it was not until the final hole, where one just “couldn’t take a trick” and the other was able to play steady golf, that the September medalist was decided.  On a freezing, very windy and wet afternoon the results were;

Winner & September Medalist; Les Gaunt – 83/9/74 from Andrew Clement – 86/9/77

NTPs; 15th – Les Gaunt

Least Putts; 25 – Andrew Clement

The day saw the RGC men’s “Play-9” qualifying round.  Winners were; Scott Williams – 43/9/34, Les Gaunt – 41/4.5/36.5.  Scott and Les will go on to represent RGC at the Dalhousie District final at Seymour on October 21st.

Wednesday September 12th – Stableford

The club’s 18 hole Stableford competition round was played in good conditions.  The greens were playing very true but quite quickly so players had to be careful when making a long putt.  The fairways were greening up nicely and, while there were still a few bare patches here and there, new growth was poking through.   It was a perfect morning for golf and the beautiful conditions encouraging more players to come for the 18-hole competition or to enjoy a relaxed, social round of 12 holes.

Winner; Jenny Hartley – 30 points.

Monday September 10th – DDGA RWH 4BBB Final – Alexandra G. C.

Pam Drummond and Jenny Hartley and Wendy Gosden (playing on her own as her partner Elaine Scanlon was quite crook) represented Romsey Golf Club on Monday Sept 10th at Alexandra Golf Club for the Dalhousie final of the Royal Women’s Hospital 4BBB.  We qualified after winning at club level.  It was a beautiful day, great scenery and the course was in good condition.  The greens were very difficult to read and the home side Alexandra won on the day with 43 stableford points.  They now go on to represent Dalhousie District.

We came home having had a very enjoyable day.

Saturday September 8th – G4aC – 4B Aggregate Stableford

A wonderful early spring day for the club’s 2nd “Golf for a Cause” event, a $10.00 round with $5.00 from each player going to cancer research.  Uneven numbers meant one group of three where everyone paired with everyone else.  The course was generally in good condition however there were still many bare patches on some fairways while other fairways had lush cover.  Life member, Bruce Robb, had done a tremendous job keeping the rough well trimmed, he even found some time to cut a few fairways as well!  As the round progressed the day cooled and the sky clouded over; the back nine proved much more challenging.  Throughout the round  the course echoed with cheers and horns from the RDFL preliminary final sadly the golf was nowhere near that close as, despite the generally good conditions, only one player was able to better his handicap.  On a day where the front nine was played in beautiful conditions and the back nine was much tougher the results were;

Winners; Mal Mottram (11)/Anthony Lakey (22) – 65 pts from Kevin Dunn (24)/Mal Mottram (11)  – 63 pts

Individual winner; Mal Mottram (11) – 37 pts

NTPs; 1st – Scott Williams, 15th – Mal Mottram

Wednesday September 5th – Ambrose – The Old Course

On another warm reasonably still early spring day players enjoyed a friendly game of Ambrose over 12 holes of “ The Old Course”.  The fairway mower could be heard across the course and all players appreciated the work being done, especially when they played on these freshly mown fairways. The winning team on the day was;

Jenny Hartley, Denise O’Meara, & Lorraine Robb 56/11.11/44.89 narrowly defeating Leila Beasley, Hugh Williams, Neryl-Lea & Roger Sparke 57/10.91/46.09

Saturday September 1st – Stableford

After a mostly sunny dry week rain on Friday afternoon and early Saturday morning meant more soft fairways, mud on balls and numerous plugged shots.  The round began under overcast skies but this soon lifted and the sun shone through giving golfers the hope of a pleasant afternoon on course however, conditions soon changed with an intermittent southerly wind and three bouts of freezing rain, each lasting around 30 minutes.  Many players who had done well over the first few holes suddenly found their rounds crumbling, freezing hands and wet grips saw shots well wide of the green and numerous putts just seemed to slip passed the cup.  Under these tough conditions only two players were able to better their handicaps.  On a very challenging day on course the results were;

Winner; Scott Williams (19) – 37 pts C/B from Andrew Clement (10) & Mick Nicholls Snr (23) – 34 pts

NTPs; 1st – Jim Patton, 15th – Mal Mottram

Wednesday August 29th – Monthly Medal – Stroke

Another beautiful morning to be out on the park, clear skies, the merest puff of wind and warming, late winter sunshine.  There was plenty of activity on the course so golfers had to stay alert for fairway and rough mowers, members filling pot-holes and repairing cross-overs and the more than occasional dog walker. The beautiful sunshine quickly melted the white frost from the below zero overnight temperature.

Some members had returned from a couple weeks of holidays and was amazed at the drying out of the course, the quickness in the greens and good grass cover over the fairways.  Despite most players finding the course quite heavy, especially on the front nine, the August medal was a close contest.  One player eventually drew away from the field; sinking some long putts on the final few holes.  On a wonderful day for golf the results were;
Winner & August medalist; Jenny Hartley – 100/24/76 from Elaine Scanlon – 109/30/79 and Wendy Gosden – 112/29/83
